Hi All,I'm new to this site. Been lurking for a week or so. I'm not an audiophile!! Just like to listen to decent tunes.
We've got an older Yamaha receceiver RX-V870 that we want to hook new speakers too. I'm thinking that the 60's should be about right. It will be for music only. The room is approx. 14X14X8 with an open stairwell. Will my receiver handle the 60's. We do not use an amp. Can buy one if necessary. Thanks much. Joe.

I think that is the same receiver I used to own, can't remember the power rating though? Anyway, you should have no problem driving the 60's. Since they are 8 ohm speakers they will perform very nice for you. Also, that size room will be fine. I currently am driving my 60's in a room a little bigger than that with a Denon 2805 which is rated at 100watts/channel. Before I got my Denon, I was using an early 90's JVC Pro Logic receiver and it sound great.

Should be no problem. The M60s are 8 ohm and reasonably efficient so almost any receiver or amp can drive them -- but it seems like the RX-V870 has lots of power anyways.

With the M80s (4 ohm load) you have to be more careful with what you hook them up to, but the M60s work with pretty much any electronics. The main thing to remember is that bigger speakers tend to be EASIER to drive than smaller speakers (because they are more efficient and thus need less power), not harder to drive...

EDIT -- this is wierd... I can find lots of reviews on the RX-V870 (all positive so far) but Yamaha doesn't seem to think it exists... go figure.

If you were asking about M3s or M50s, I'd have much more to say.

With 60's come great music. Good bass for stereo. IMHO.

Hey Joe! Welcome to the forum. I just recently purchased the 60's for a music only set up. I have powered them with 50 watts, 70 watts, and 150 watts. they sound good in all three setups. Actually they sound great in all three set ups. I listen to all kinds of music from Beck to Bach, and Lennon to Marks, and Basement Tapes to Toy's in the Attic; it's all good.

I own 60's and enjoy them in 5.1 or 2-ch stereo.

but recently i've been setting my x-over to 40 0r 60 hz and listened with my ep175. And i have to say, musically this is a great sub! Tight and enveloping. It is great in a music set-up.

Are they good alone? definitely.

Are they better with my 175? Yes.
