ok. my buddy has like 8000.00 invested in JM Lab Utopia BE speakers..the bookshelves and surrounds etc...and he is VERY upset...after listening to my M60Ti's...he swears...and i mean swears, that my Axioms are as good if not better than his stereo set up..and at a fraction of the price. he feels like he has been taken.

i told him we will do a blind test at his place, so all other things are equal and he can be sure, but boy was he mad...he says he was "smoozed" which i think means "taken for a ride" on his focals....

i feel great, but boy he is pissed. oh well... again, axiom should be more well known for how good they really are.

as he was leaving he says.."so...how much do you think i could get for my focal setup on ebay? and then i could buy the EP 600 HT package???" ROTFL...
i feel his pain...just thought i'd share
I have heard the JM Lab Utopia's and thought they were an excellent speaker. Are the Axioms better?...that may be pushing it. They are however overpriced (JM) in my book but an excellent speaker none the less.

Your buddy is more choked over the dollars spent then the sound! Do a side by side one day but make sure you keep it apples to apples as in floorstander to floorstander and bookshelf to bookshelf etc. If he doesn't like what he hears, Axiom gains another customer!

see? that's what I told him..that my speakers might sound better, but that is because of my 4 drivers VS his 2 drivers...but he INSISTS....that my speakers sound as good if not better. i am the one arguing against it, but he insists..and yes, he is bent over the cash for sure...

JM Labs Utopias? Incredibly good speakers. He may want to wait for an A/B demo in his room or yours before he throws them away. Room acoustics are a major and unsung factor in audio sound. JM Labs makes wonderful speakers - Utopias? Top shelf world class.

Axiom makes great speakers, and I believe Axiom could make speakers as wonderful as the Utopias.

I hope our friends spend part of their winter in the frozen north listening to some Utopias, some Reference 3a de capo mm i's, and come up with Axiom speakers which will match them for $1500 a pair. Axiom's greatness is superb sound quality at a great price, but there are some big Knockers out there ... don't lose perspective.

Yikes! If you have any doubts as to how closely these speakers approach the horizontal on the slope of diminishing returns, this quote from the website might tell you.

"This is simply the point of no return. There is nothing finer. A feat of both design and engineering converge in one fabulously extravagant product. Look and wonder, but if you have to ask the price..."

I have no doubt that the speakers sound good, but sometimes reality needs to slap you upside the head.

Well, the point on the value/quality axis where your comfortable is a matter of personal preference. For some folks a pair of Polk R25s on sale for $150 a pair would do nicely. How much better are Axioms? Is the difference in quality worth the price? You may answer one way, someone else may think that the price difference is not worth the sound difference. Same for JM Labs Utopias. There is a difference, PMB. You may think the difference in sound quality between M60s and Utopias are not worth the price difference. Someone else may be willing to pay the price.

These are all good points and very true indeed. That aside, it has to make you feel pretty darn good about your recent purchase. I know it made me feel pretty good.
cheers

Point taken, 2x6. I guess I just can't see myself ever treading that asymptotic cost vs. value added limit, even if future disposable income would allow it. I am not everybody, though.

yup. i feel DAMN good about my purchase...but i did before he said all this...now i just feel better. LOL

Yes we would all be eager if you guys could do an A/B comparison in his home.
Posted By: 2x6spds Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/27/05 07:57 PM
Just saw a pair of JM Labs Utopia BE Signature Towers for $3,600 on ebay. I paid either $1200 or $1300 (don't remember) for a pair of mint used Thiel CS 3.6 towers. Point is, you can narrow the the cost spread. I love Axiom speakers, but there are other great speakers out there.

And nobody has ever said any differently.
Posted By: Jinx Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/27/05 10:57 PM
we will definitely be doing an A/B blind comparison next week at HIS house..with his equipment... a nice Aragon 4004 amp too...and we will have multiple opinions there...not just his and mine..and remember, this was HIS opinion..i still think his sound better by far...but he disagrees and so we will see soon enough.

Sounds great! Keep us posted..

Give us a report on the dual VTF-3s he is running in his system too.
Posted By: Jinx Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/28/05 03:08 AM
i made a mistake, his JM Labs are the Electra's BE...907 series, they are bookshelves...if that helps???
Posted By: littleb Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/28/05 03:08 PM
You mean to tell me that he actually paid 8K for bookshelves.??? Your friend must be a single dude. I don't even want to think about the carnage that would happen in my house if I spent that kind of cabbage on speaks. OUCH!
Posted By: Jinx Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/28/05 04:47 PM
no no, 8k was for ALL his speakers, the bookies were about 3k i think, sides 2.5k, rears 1.5k, center 2.5k but he got a bit of a deal on the whole bundle
Posted By: oz350z Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/28/05 04:58 PM
I love that! A bit of a deal.
Posted By: littleb Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/28/05 06:30 PM
Only 3K for bookshelves. I see. Now, that's a deal. I'd only get a partial mangling, then.

They are great speakers. The midrange is excellent. They work well with tube gear.

They go especially well with bedsheets.

Klansman must love them.

Wow
This post has gone much better than the similar one over at AVS.
Posted By: Wid Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/30/05 03:12 PM
I've been reading that thread too.I think it is quite amusing a person can comment one how well a speaker will perform without ever listening to them.
Posted By: Ajax Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/30/05 03:22 PM
It's the same 3 or 4 guys who always jump into an Axiom thread over there and tear down the speakers and the company. While it's unpleasant, Craig and I find it difficult to let them get away with their biased, and often untrue, criticism.

At this point it's down to the "you said...," "no I didn't. What I said was...," "yes you did. No you didn't" stage. It goes nowhere. I haven't been over there this morning yet, but I expect the thread to be locked down by Monday, at the latest.
Posted By: hashts Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 10/31/05 08:20 PM
Wow I just spent an hour or so going through that entire thread and it just shows how mature and understanding this forum is. Amazing that a guy claims to have never heard a speaker but then compares it to another brand. When you guys started calling him on it was hilarious how he tried to explain he compared specs and not the actual speakers.
Posted By: bray Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 11/01/05 12:14 AM
AVS has become a scary place to post almost anything. I'll read, but never post. The last time I posted over there was when someone who had never even heard Axioms said they were extremely harsh sounding speakers. I posted (very politely) something to the effect that one should actually hear a speaker before making such a statement. I was basically called an idiot and received a few less than nice PMs. Although I usually wont back down from a fight, I decided that in this case it just wasnt worth it.
Posted By: Wid Re: my friend just left very upset and angry - 11/01/05 12:47 AM
I've been reading the on going thread over there, the couple of anti Axiom folks there appear to be a joke imo.Now it seems even Thiel speakers are of a flawed design .
Bray - The fun part of these guys, one is an audio salesman in New Mexico, one has been banned under something like 8 names, and none of them has ever done a blind test with Axioms.

Then they start about the hype stuff, yet everytime I see the guys talk about other speakers here, no one tries to jam Axiom on anyone.

The GOOD news, Petre has resurfaced. Always a welcome sight.

"The GOOD news, Petre has resurfaced. Always a welcome sight."

Yea... between you, Jack, and Petre, it seems the good "doctor" is taking a good thrashing. Keep up the good work!

I read through that post over there today and I was another who thought some of the comments were.....hilarious.

Holy @#!$.

Is it always that dysfunctional over there?

For the most part.....YES.
