I currently own a Definitive Technology Reference Cube. But since purchasing an entire home theatre system of Axiom speaker I was wondering about the EP600. Can anyone pass comments on it and if they know how it would compare with my current Definitive Tech. sub? Here are the specs on the Definitive...
Dimensions: 16-3/4" W x 16-3/4" D x 16-15/16" H
Frequency Response: 11 Hz — 200Hz
Driver Complement: One 14" long-throw subwoofer coupled to two 14" infrasonic radiators
Built-in Amplifier: 1800 watts Digitally-Coupled Class D Amplifier
Low Pass Crossover: 24 dB/octave continuously adjustable variable (40 —150 Hz) plus Unfiltered LFE direct coupled input
High Pass Crossover: 12dB/octave continuously variable (40 — 150hz)
Speaker level: 6 dB octave (80 Hz)
Finish: Piano gloss black or golden cherry
Weight: 111 lbs.

As you can see there is quite a difference in power and even the Hz compaired to the Axiom - but does the Axiom's Intelligent DSP Technology
add that much to make it better? I figured it would just match better with my new Axiom system ( and I'd give the Definitive to my brother).
I don't mind ordering the EP600 and giving it a go - however I dread having to pack the sucker back up and getting it over Fedex for return if I must.
Hope you guys can give some good feed back on this.
THANKS.

One thing to remember about power is that these are two different designs. General rule of thumb is that the smaller the subwoofer box is, the less efficient the design, and the more power a subwoofer will need. I don't have my calculator, but I'm assuming that the the EP600 has more volume, thus require less power.

As far as the frequency response is concerned, keep in mind that Definitive Technology tend to over specify their frequency response. Even if it was true, frequency response only tells part of the story.

I'm not saying that one is better than the other since I have not heard either subwoofer. All I'm saying is be careful when just comparing specifications.

Personally, if you were completely happy with your Definitive Technology I would keep it and leave well enough alone. However, that's just me, but I don't think you will be disappointed with the EP600. With that said, matching brand names between your speakers and
subwoofer is not as important.

Good luck.

I basically agree with jinhan. His comments about power consumption are dead-on. I'm sure your DefTech is a very capable sub; I am a little suspect whether it actually reproduces down to 11 Hz.

The form-factor is going to be a huge change; the DT is a REALLY small box, especially compared to an EP600. I should think that the DSP in the EP600 would negate any advantages people might claim about the "musicality" of sealed subs.

I don't get why you're framing this as an "either / or" proposition. Why not just ADD an EP500 or EP600 and run them along with your DefTech?

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I will take the leap and order it. I was just asking to see if anyone here had it and what they felt about it compared to a previous sub they may have owned since this is newer and different technology.
Thanks again.

Don't forget the 600's little brother the EP500, it blows me away in my 900 sqft room. If money is an issue, you could save a little money, plus it is easier to find a placement for it in your room as its footprint is smaller. You can also order from the Factory Outlet to save another 10%.

Actually the vertical EP600 is the same in width and 2.5" less in depth, so the 600 takes up less floor area than the 500, but needs more air space.

If its in your budget I would also go with the 600, probably would have gone that route myself, but the 500 has more WAF and is a great sub.

Well folks I did it - I odered and got my EP600. All my fears have been washed away. The performance of this giant is outstanding. It blows away the Definitive Technology in ways I never imagined.
The purity of the lower frequencies, along with the wealth of power behind it raises the presentation to incredible heights. (or rather depths)
In both two channel music and of course 7.1 film presentations i was taken to new wide-eyed wonders. Even MONO films have become a wonder now impowered with a more theatrical feel.
The bass is lower, deeper and precise. No boom, no distoration. It plays smooth and becomes part of the rest of the speaker line like a well fitting shoe. It is true that the bass is more felt rather than heard. I am amazed. 2-channel music which never had presence now extends to levels I never thought it had. The neighbors have already banged on the wall - during a testing of the new release of the film EARTHQUAKE on DVD.
My recent purchase of (2) M80's, Center 150, (4) SQ8's is not complete with this addition. As a review of DVDs is can be a chore sitting through a lot of garbage anything that aids in that is a God send, and makes the re-discovery of viewing my favorites that much more fun.
Thank you all for your positive feedback and helpfull suggestions in my final choice.
I will will be adding pics to the Axiom Family area soon.

Scott, I have the EP500, and I'm glad to hear someone else use the descriptive term "smooth" when discussing the bass produced by these DSP subs. That's the term that pops into my head most often. No boom, just tight clean bass. Glad you're enjoying your system.

Scott, Great review, that's an awesome system you have put together, looking forward to some pics.

Great Scott! (hmmm, I've heard that somewhere!).

Glad you are pleased. Makes me wish I had one.

John,
I thought the same thing when I got my 600 . That’s why I was sure you’d love it. It’s an amazing sub. The 500 would keep up with it for movie play back (almost, but not quite), but for music, I found the 600 to be vastly superior.

The 12 YO picked out Blade III to watch last night. It’s the first time I’ve seen it with the 600 in the mix. It was quite a treat to watch. I actually watched the movie this time instead of just watching Jessica Bien.
