Has anyone placed their M50s-80s and/or their sub on top of a component cabinet or stand?

I want to upgrade my CRT TV to a RP model and my existing component cabinet isn't wide enough. Plus it's out of room for addtional components. My problem is that I can not find an entertainment center ("single unit" or modular) that will accomodate the TV and allow me to keep the EP500 and M80s on the same wall on the floor. So, my thought was to either purchase or build a component cabinet that is the width of the front wall (~11') so that I have room for additional components and then place the TV, M80s and EP500 on top. The cabinet would be ~22"-24" high. I'm not too concerned about the M80s, but would the 500 vibrate the living crap out of everything in the cabinet and what's on it? At the moment, I don't have the option of moving the 500 to a side wall and I've read bad things about placing it in a cabinet.

Thoughts/suggestins?

Placing the M80's that high will be a significant compormise. unless you places your chairs on 24 inch stands as well. Of couse it will work but you certainly wont be taking advantage of what the speakers can offer with proper placement.

Perhaps you need to look into getting stand type component racks. Such as salamander Archetype series also known in the DIY community as "flexy racks" and keep the RPTV on the floor. Or get a LCD/Plasma and wall mount it.

Actually, I already have the M80s on 24" stands and haven't noticed any change. I use them for HT (close seating) and for music for those standing in the rear of the room (parties and such). With them on the floor, they are blocked by furniture.

Basically I have to have everything on one wall and there isn't enough room to include audio racks/towers/stands along with the M80s, 500 and TV. It's a width issue. I can't use a wall mounted TV as I would end up with something in front of it. So, my only option (as I see it) is to put my components underneath the speakers in cabinets. In order to do this effectively, I would need to place the 500 on top of the cabinet as well.

i think you would be alright, just make sure that you make your creation is very strong, you dont want to introduce raddles into your ht area, I would definatly use wood screws and not nails, also if you are going to have the 80’s at the ends of your stand I would make custom “stands” for the 80’s maybe a piece of wood that you would have to make a base for the 80’s to angle them down and possibly in a little bit, for better imaging, kind of like the movie theater does with the speakers angling them down towards the crowd.

I think this should be OK. On the subwoofer front, a couple of companies are selling vibration absorbing platforms -- one called a "SubDude" -- a few inches thick which fit between the subwoofer and the floor and pretty much isolate it.

I'm not saying you need to get one of these platforms, just that subwoofers seem to work fine without having to couple into whatever they are sitting on.

In my case, I was thinking of raising my M60s 12" just to get the tweeters up to ear level

Thanks for the input. I'm still experimenting to see what sounds best or if I can tell a difference. I've had the M80s on 24" stands for awhile which placed the tweeters at roughly the same level as the 150. Since I started this chain, I've put them back on the ground and haven't noticed a difference so far. Just this morning I placed the 500 on a 24" stand to see if it makes a difference. No conclusions yet.

The following picture from the 'Axiom family' page illustrates how one member (Rcvecc) elevated their 80s so that the tweeters are on an even plane with the VP150 ... Rcvecc if you are still around, I really like your setup. Very nice and clean.

I like those "stands" much better than what I was using.

Wonder if I could talk my wife into a second EP500?
