This is my first post on Axioms site, it looks like there a lot of knowledgeable users here!

I am hoping to setup a HT system sometime this year and am in the process of short listing some speakers.

Does anyone have any thoughts about how using M22's for front channel speakers would work? They would most likely be paired with an Outlaw LFM-1 sub and 1070 reciever. Will the M22's go deep enough (or the LFM-1 high enough) that I will be able to blend them together nicely?

I had originally thought of getting a set of M60's and no sub, but for an extra hundred bucks or so I can switch and get smaller front's and a separate sub. Do you think my original train of thought was better?

Your question could be better solved with some room dimensions, I have M22's and a cheap sub in a 12X16 room that is open at one end to 27' and the M22's fill it nicely with sound and the sub adds that extra little bit that the 22 don't drop down to.

Yep, had them sitting right beside me and forgot to add them...

The room is in my basement. The dimensions are 25'x13'x7.5' and the display would be on the 13' wall. I currently have a pool table/ dart board set up at the far end of the room behind the couch.

Just a quick note to make sure that you're figuring in the cost for some stands for the M22s.....or wall-mounts.

Some people find that by the time they add stands, it just makes more sense to get the 60s....

You could make your own stands much cheaper than buying a set, just decorative blocks work. As you won't be much farther away than I am, the 22's and a sub more than foot the bill.

You say you are building an HT system, do you have surrounds and center already?

How loud do you like to listen to your music and do you want the speakers to fill the entire room when you are playing pool etc. at the other end? Answers to these questions will help us provide good advice.

As to blending the sub and M22's for good sound, yes this combination will provide excellent sound (especially if you use your receiver for the cross-over).

Good point about the cost of stands/wall mounts, I will have to add them to my shopping list. I hadn't costed them at all yet, sounds like I may need to raid the beer fund for a bit more coin.

What are these decorative blocks you mention? Good to hear you are enjoying your M22's.

I'll finally be replacing the "Home Theatre" system I got in high school (11 yr old Philips FR-951 reciever and some expensive to me at the time Sony speakers). I would like to get one of the Axiom centers, and for the time being the Sonys will have to do as the surrounds.

I don't need to rock the place with the music. When playing music, 95% of the time there's 6-7 people in the room that want to be able to talk and hear each other. I rarely sit down and just listen to music, if that is what you are wondering.

Yeah, I had never heard of auditions before I checked out this site. Fort McMurray is a quick WestJet flight away from Calgary!

I was more getting at the sound level you want to achieve. The M22's with a sub sound terrific and would be plenty loud at the 12 or 13 feet listeninng distance I think you mentioned. But if you want it real loud 20 or 25 feet away while playing pool I'd go for the M60's. Regardless of which mains you choose, I'd get a decent sub for watching movies.

Just a suggestion on a couple of things. You could save money a get one heck of a good receiver going with the Sherwood Newcastle R-771 available right here from Axiom. You could also look at the Hsu STF 3 which is pretty much the same thing as the Outlaw LFM 1 but less expensive due to the sale @ Hsu right now.

I'm not sure if wid posted it or not in another thread, but electronicsforless.ca has what looks like a pretty good sale on STF-3's right now.

The only notable difference I see (on paper) between the Outlaw and the HSU is the crossover. The STF-3 goes up to 90Hz while the Outlaw goes higher.

Does anyone see a problem being limited to 90Hz crossover with the M22's? Can anyone share the crossover they use when they have use the M22's as front L/R in a home theatre?

What the crossovers on the subs are capable of really doesn't matter when using them for a home theater system. You would use the crossover on the receiver and disable the one on the sub.

Well, it looks like I can get the STF-3 to my door for about $680CDN while the LFM-1 would be pushing $920CDN. Has anyone compared these two subs? I'll probably save myself a couple hundred bucks and get some better surrounds. Any other subs I should consider in this price range?

They are basically the same darn thing. Dr. Hsu had big part in the design of the LFM 1. They are the same exact size, same size amp and the tuning frequency is the same (25HZ).

The blocks I was refering to was just an idea of some wood/cement blocks. The stands do not have to be Audio oriented, they seem to cost more when its for audio specific things. Upside down milk crates with a piece of wood bolted to it for the speaker to sit on and some nice cloth over top could work.

If you are buying a new flat screen and not wall mounting it, The M22's could sit beside it if the stand is big enough eliminating the cost of stands all together

I had to respond because my theater has the same setup. I have an Outlaw 1070 receiver, M22s, VP150, and QS8 and QS4s. I also have the LFM-1. In my room, which is slightly smaller, I can get plenty loud and have great sound. I think the Outlaw/Axiom combo is very nice. I think HSU is similar, but I have not heard any other sub with my system.
The 1070 is nice because it lets you do alot with the sub x-over adjustments. One of the few receivers I found that let you set the channel x-over individually.
Oh, and if you are putting the LFM-1, or any downfiring sub, on carpeting get something called a SubDude.

I am currently in the process of making my own speaker stands. I highly recommend this design. All the supplies needed can be found at your local Home Depot store.

Just because I'm paranoid and have kids, I would double the size of the base of any stand I would build or use a 19.5" truck rim and weld a steel post and top plate to that.
