I have an older Onkyo TXDS676 that runs 85x5 at 8ohms. It has some stuff about 6ohms in the owners manual but nothing about 4ohms. Is 4ohms to low for this reciever...or will it just run a little warm. I plan to upgrade one day but could always just get a new amp and use the Onkyo as a Preamp. But I am already planning for a full speaker upgrade (m80,vp150,qs8, and outdoor speakers) so i'm trying to spend my $ wisely.

My guess is that the 676, as will most solid state avr's will drive the 80's. The question is to what levels will you listen before it shuts down.

According to this, you can source 120W out of this integrated receiver. So I don't see a problem unless you have a room like Sirquack's .

I am hoping it only shuts down every now n then lol. But it should at least run them...not fry.

Cool Mojo I have never seen a rating at 4ohms on it!

Another question....will the amp overall run harder if all the conected speakers are below 8 ohm? Does it increse the chance of thermal protection?

Mark, as Randy pointed out, sure, it'll run M80s, the question being how loud and how long. You'll only know by trying it in your own usage requirements. If it shuts down on some particular material, then play that material a little less loudly.

Yes, unless those other 4 ohm speakers are more sensitive they'll use more current and increase the overall system load on the receiver.
