I just bought an NAD 720bee receiver. I'm in need of a pair of speakers now, and have noticed alot of happy Axiom owners here. My past 2 pairs of speakers have been BA's, both floor standing. I have less room now, so I need bookshelf speakers. I just auditioned a pair of BA CR77's and really liked them. I was just curious how people here thought Axiom compared to BA. I unfortunately haven't had the chance to audition any Axioms yet, but the last time I bought a pair of BA's I auditioned Polk, Klipch, and Paradigm, and enjoyed the BA's much better.

I was thinking about trying a pair of Axiom bookshelf speakers, and would like to hear what people think about Boston Acoustics speakers compared to Axiom.

P.S. I'm also considering trying a pair of Magneplaner MMG speakers. I don't know if my NAD 720BEE could drive a pair of Magneplaners properly. The Magneplaner MMG's are 4 ohm speakers, and they need alot of power from what I've been reading. My NAD is suppose to handle 4 ohm loads well, but it's only rated at 50 wpc.

I have not heard Boston Acoustic speakers. I can tell you that, in my opinion, that Axioms are better overall than Polk or Klipsch. To me, these Retail type speakers are not in the same league as Axiom.

Now, the Paradigm "Studio" series and above are a much closer match. The Monitor series are a step below Axiom.

You might try using the Search feature and see if you can find any past threads on this topic. Otherwise, I would encourage you to check the Audition threads to see if anyone is in your area, that is what sold me.

To give you an idea of the quality, I would compare the Axiom m60's to the B&W 703's, which are very expensive speakers.

Wayne, welcome. The lack of direct replies to your question isn't because of a lack of interest, but simply because of no reliable information being available. Very few have heard the Bostons and almost certainly nobody has compared them with Axioms at the same place, at the same time, with the same material, etc. Any other comparison would be of little value.

You should check the audition thread to see if there's someone in your area who could give you a listen to their Axioms. If not, consider doing what most of us have done and order an appropriate Axiom model to try. In your described circumstance the M22s(which I've enjoyed for five years now)should suit you well.

I gave a friend some old Boston A100s last xmas but i never did compare them to the Axioms. I have no info on modern BA and do not recall any posts where such a discussion has occurred. I have to go with JohnK on this one.
There just may not be alot of info in these forums in this regard.

Hi Wayne. I'm responding because I am the proud owner of both MMGs and many Axiom speakers (M22's, M3's, M2's, as well as QS8's and an EP500). I love them all, but they are different. Overall, I find the Axioms easier to drive, to place, and to live with.

Yes, the maggies love and need decent power. You can certainly drive them with that NAD (I owned a different model), but I suspect that your satisfaction will depend on the size of the room and your listening habits.

Are these primarily for music? HT? Both? One thing about the maggies is that they aren't as dynamic as most box speakers, at least not without feeding tons of power, and getting upgraded stands to brace them. Then you're in such different price leagues that you can consider Axiom floorstanders.

Only thing I might add is that back when I was editing audio/video magazines in Canada and the US, I always found that Boston's strengths lay in their bookshelf models, the A40, A60, A70 and, I think, the A100--if that was a bookshelf model. The only BA floorstanders we tested back in the '80s and early '90s had problems with musical imbalances and coloration.

I have no experience with recent BA floorstanders (in the last 10 years), nor do I know who is designing them, since the company changed hands not long ago.

I think Wayne would be thrilled with the Axiom speakers' transparency, natural tonal balance and absence of coloration.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up getting an NAD C525BEE CD Player to go along with the NAD C720BEE Receiver. I was able to get the receiver new in the box for $419.00 shipped from ebay. I got the cd player at audioadvisor.com for $299.00 shipped, couldn't find one on ebay. I ended up getting a used pair of Mission 761 bookshelf speakers from ebay for $94.00 shipped, I thought I'd just try em' out. They are pretty old I think, but they don't sound bad at all. They can do Bach's Toccata and Fugue in Dm pretty nice indeed. I found a pair of Boston Acoustic VR3 floorstanding speakers on ebay new in the box for $576.00 shipped, so I got em', couldn't pass that deal up. Like I said I've owned two pairs of BA's before, and I loved em, but as was mentioned earlier they have changed hands and may not be as good anymore. If these don't work out I'll give Axiom a try.
