hey,
been gone for awhile but just went for the trade in plan. upgrading from ep175-->ep500 and vp100-->vp150. \:\)
still keeping M22 and QS4 for now.

anyway, I been wanting to replace my toshiba dvd player. it freezes way to much and skips the first couple of seconds on audio cd's.

I read lots of good things about oppo, but I have a denon 2807 and would like to mate up with that for aesthetic reasons. I dont mind spending an extra $100 bucks or so to get a match, but i dont want to go backwards on quality also.

So my question is: Does anyone have an opinion on the Denon DVD-1940CI. It is fairly new and replaces the DVD-1930. the list price is $369. here is a link.

originally i was considering an oppo, hadnt nailed down which model. I hear so much good about oppo, but really would like to match up with another denon. I would be using hdmi through the denon 2807 and viewing on a sharp 52" lcd model Sharp-LC-52D62U.
i dont currently have any sacd or dvd-a, but would like to be able to use them. I mainly watch dvd's, burned dvd content, and listen to audio cd's. the usb/card reader features of some models arent important, as i have a htpc hooked to the denon 2807 anyway.

No idea about the particular model you are looking at but you should really consider the OPPO 980. It's a great DVD player and does DVDA and SACD as well as DIVX.
If you are looking for a new DVD player at that price, Imo you might as well get a HD-DVD player. They would cost less than the Denon, play both formats and look great on your Sharp TV.

that's something i hadnt considered, but is a good point. I guess I was waiting for the format war to settle.

i am hoping that someone chimes in and has this unit or its predecessor.
I install denon dvd players all the time, The last one was a 2930Ci... Although I really dont care about stuff in someone elses house I think that they are decent. I mean, its a dvd player. it plays dvd's. not much else to it.
I have been upset with Denon ever since I bought a DVD-2900 (one of the first universal players) for $1000 and it stopped working after two years. That said, if you are sold on Denon, then the DVD-1930 can be found at Magnolia stores for about $150.00 (as they phase them out for the 1940.)

I now have an OPPO DV-970HD. It has been interesting because of it's SACD history. When I bought it, it would not play the gap-less tracks without a pause. This is very annoying on many recordings. They have released an effect firmware update which you can download from their site. The player still has a minor SACD problem in that it skips the long pauses that are suppose to be between tracks. There is a subtle, but audible "pop" and the next track begins. This only affects SACD, not CD, DVD, or DVD-A. I have not heard whether or not this has been corrected in the DV-980H. I talked to their customer service about the problem and their engineers acknowledged it long before the 980 came out, so they probably did.

They did go to black for the DV-980-H, so it would look a lot like the Denon player.

i went ahead and ordered the dvd-1940 from onecall.com
onecall had the dvd-1930 on sale, but the 1940 had free 3 day shipping so the net difference was only around $25.

i had already called the local bestbuy/magnolia to see what they had in stock , and all they had in denon was the entry level 1740?.

yea i probably shoulda waited and got a hd/bluray player, but i'm not ready to make that jump yet.

thanks for all the responses, if the 1940 ends up being a lemon I'll come back here and whine about it \:\)
Just a little heads up.
I couldnt figure out how to get this unit to upscale the video, even after reading the manual. I missed it in the manual :(.
I called onecall on saturday and got some good assistance even on Saturday. the guy found it in the manual.

you have to set the upscaling using the hdmi button on the front panel. you cant do it from the remote, nor thru the on screen setup. Once i was told how to do it, it isnt a big deal. Its a 'set it and forget it' kind of thing.

didnt do any A/B comparisons, so cant comment on the upscaling quality. The unit does look nice though \:\)
