well, I spent a few hours getting some stuff set up today while I wait on my speakers to arrive...

I set up my denon 3808 and ran all of my speaker wire, hooked up bananna plugs, ect.

I did some wire treatment, and about 20 zip ties later they are hidden pretty well.

However, The denon 3808 does not output sound to the monitor over hdmi unless the input is hdmi... \:\( for $1600 MSRP you would think it could do this!

Anyway, I am trying to figure out how to output the sound to my monitor over rca plugs so that I have some sound for my xbox. My 360 hooks up via component cables and I can not figure out how to get the sound to go to my tv! I was able to go into the GUI menu and under hdmi->audio-> select output to monitor, so my hd dvd player and cable have sound... but I can not find the option to output sound to my monitor via rca plugs for my xbox.

Anyway, I am basically killing time now while the firmware updates on my denon.

If it wasn't for the 20 zip ties I would just run my xbox to my tv directly and bypass the receiver until my axioms show up.

If I can't figure it out I will be cutting a lot of zip ties soon!

input appreciated...

The Gui is on your 3808 or the Xbox?

I am guessing you have an input assigned wrongly on the 3808; whatever the input is assigned to for the components into the Denon the audio cables must be plugged into the audio in jacks labeled the same as the Component in. IE Component input 1 assigned as TV then the RCAs must be plugged into audio in on the TV input section.
I did a quick search on google and came up with someone with the same problem...

"On my set it has a set of audio jacks RIGHT besides the HDMI input that is used. (I think this may be your problem)

In addtion you have to set the audio to analog input on the TV."

Hope this helps, which TV do you have?
the gui is for the receiver not the 360,
my tv is a sony kdfe50a10 or something along those lines. its a 50" lcdrp.

Anyway, I gave up on trying for now... just cut a bunch of zip ties and am bypassing the receiver for a couple of weeks (hopefully sooner?) until my axioms show up. Then everything will be fine.

I ordered my speakers about 8 days ago, and the FO had an averaged wait time of 2.5 weeks... hopefully I will see them soon \:\)

Thanks for the input
Of course, you could get an optical cable, that attaches to the RGB cable pack, for the 360...andstop using the RCA plugs? Just a thought.

I had to replace my 360 (RRoD) and the new ones come with HDMI! YEAH!
I have an optical cable running from my 360 to my denon for when I get my speakers... Doesnt really matter with my monitor current boom box speakers running out of my monitor
In order to push sound to your TV ( Monitor ) using the monitor speakers rather than the speakers connected to the DENON, you have to change the HDMI settings:

Read page 11 ( bottom left sentence )

* to Output the sound from the TV, make the settings at the GUI menu "Manual setup" - HDMI setup - AUDIO - TV ( page 30 )

By default it is set up to play through the Denon's speakers.

Hope this helps you.

Jeff
I am confused because this sounds backwards to me (I apologize if I have misread the information).

Assuming that you get your TV signal over the air via antenna, that would make your TV the recipient of the signal. You would want to move the audio FROM the TV to the 3808, not the other way around. That lets the 3808 distribute the audio to the speakers you hooked up.

The Xbox audio would go from the Xbox to the 3808 via a separate audio connection (optical, coax, composite, etc.) and the 3808 distributes to the speakers - audio doesn't move over component cables. A set of video component cables should run from the Xbox to the 3808 and another set runs from the 3808 to the TV. The audio shouldn't go to the TV, it goes to the 3808.

One of the things that needs to happen here is to take whatever you hook up and get into the 3808 setup menu and assign the audio and video connections so that things work as you designed them to work. You will also need to do the same thing in the setup menu for the TV.

With whatever you do, the HDMI and component(and associated) connections you make aren't going to talk to each other and switch inside of the 3808.

If you have a cable box or satellite receiver involved, things get a bit more complex.

I'm not trying to be a smart guy, but have you read the 3808 manual yet?
Ray, he said in the above post that he's waiting on his speakers to arrive. Therefore, the only sound he's try to get is from the TV speakers. If you push the HDMI signal from the source ( Xbox, DirectTV, DVD player ) etc.. into the DENON, and then HDMI from the DENON to the TV ( HDMI cable only - without any Digital audio or RCA's ), then you have to "tell" the DENON you want it to push sound to the TV through HDMI, otherwise it thinks you want to play sound on your DENON/Axiom speakers..

make sense?

jf has it correct, I have no speakers right now to hook up to my denon.

jf, unfortunately what the manual suggests does not work because the denon does not ouput sound via hdmi to tv UNLESS the input is hdmi. so component in to denon with hdmi from denon to monitor yields no sound! So I was trying to get sound to the tv some other way (by connecting an rca cable from my audio out on my denon to my audio input portion of my tv.) but I could not get it to work. The component out on my denon only has the video out portion (red green blue). However, there are 2 audio outs (rca jacks) on the denon, but for some reason I could not get the two married up together and assigned such that the video and sound was coming through.

rather than having hdmi and component running from my denon to my tv ( if i could have got it to work)I am just bypassing my receiver until my speakers arrive, and running my xbox component straight to the tv.

I have spent several hours reading manuals, searching avs forums, and playing in the gui for another reason, so I have become quite familiar with the denon so far.

the other reason is:
I have been unable to scale hdmi input sources that are 480i (like the SD channels coming from my cable box which is hooked up to my denon via hdmi) up to 720p or any other resolution.

I did manage to hook my cable box up to the denon with component cables and scale the signal that way. but I wanted to be able to scale the hdmi since it is SUPPOSED to be able to do that \:\)

I tested different cables, components, and nearly every setting in the GUI until I found the solution to the problem.

I can not output sound to the monitor via hdmi AND scale signals from 480i->720p at the same time.

If i turn to a SD channel with the audio outputting to the monitor I get a 480i picture. If I turn off the option to send audio to the tv then the picture is scaled to 720p with no problem.

I am not sure if this is a bug or limitation within the denon itself, or somehow my hdmi cable can not carry enough information for both audio and video scaling.... quite odd really.

anyway, sorry for straying off topic but I wanted to illustrate the fact that I have in fact read the manual, and spent some time over at avsforum and some trial and error with the denon it self.

also, the denon manual leaves a lot to be desired.

yep, I agree the manual needs to offer up some better descriptions and instructions. I have all of my components hooked up HDMI except my xbox 360( Composite version - WHITE ) and I'm using only the Axiom speakers, so I wasn't aware of the limitation. Sorry to sound like a know-it-all if I came across that way. I'm still playing around with the i/p scaler. It's difficult to have the best of all worlds. PLease let me know if you find a site or figure how to set up to have SD and HD satillite signals work seemless without having to manually adjust each time. I find this very annoying.

Anyway, you'll be real happy with the Axiom speakers. Once I tuned the sub ( ep500 ) it shook the house. I also bought the Denon iPod Wireless adapter ( ASD-3w ). Save yourself the cash if your planning to get it... not worth it IMO.
you did not come off that way at all, I appreciate the input.

I will be playing with this thing a lot in the comming months.

The GUI makes navigating through the menus so much fun!

Not that it matters now but I’m just curious if you switched the input mode to EXT. IN when you connected the Xbox to the Denon. Sometimes it trips me up when I forget to do that when running my HTPC which is connected via analog since I usually have the input set to AUTO.

I also vote that the Denon manuals suck.
hmmm, maybe that was the problem \:o
See - I TOLD you I might not be reading your post correctly. Since you have no speakers, ya can't hook 'em up. Got it.

Why not just take the 3808 out of the equation until you have speakers? Hook your stuff up to the TV directly.

>>>>>(Another comprehension alert - I did NOT read all of the recent posts. I'm moving too fast this morning.)
I had everything hooked up to the tv intitially, but wanted to set everything up and run the wires so that when my speakers come its all ready to go \:\)
