Sorry about this new thread but I need some help, just about got everything setup at my brother in-laws, I'm having a problem getting SACDs on his Denon 3910 to play in multichannel.

After wasting several hours last night trying to setup the Denon link I found in some fine print in the 3808s manual that the 3808 was link 3 and the 3910 is link 2 so they weren't compatible with the link.

Rant timeout, the manual for the 3808 has to be the mother of all Denon manuals for confusion!

So after wasting several hours last night, I hooked the 3910 with analog cables to the 3808s Ext. In, with the 3910 set for multi chan and a SACD in I'm only getting stereo from the mains, any help would be appreciated before my sleep deprived body chucks all his new equipment in the ocean.

Michael, I don't have either unit, so....blah, blah...blah....

But if you're hooked up with the "external in" analog cables and only getting stereo, doesn't the problem have to be menu settings within the player?

Even when I play a standard stereo cd (Oppo to SN), if I use the Ext in it comes from all speakers. So I also vote for player menu.

I've got the player set to multi, not sure what else I'm missing unless its on the 3808s side of the setup.

I used to have a Denon 3910 hooked up to my old 3805 and I remember that gave me pains gettin it setup, and I was using the link. I just can't remember what I had to do in the setup to get it to work.

You should be able to upgrade the 3910 to Link3, then it will work. You'll need the serial number of the unit, a blank CD, a CD burner, a lot of patience, and a whole lot of good luck.

Ken, Thanks that might be the easiest or most difficult way to do this.

I've downloaded the update file, now I need to copy different files onto 3 discs. I've got an old copy of Roxio on this computer and I need to copy the 1st file as ISO 9660, unfortunatly this version of roxio will only do iso + joliet and iso level 2, so now I'm trying to find something on free on the internet that will allow me to burn the files in this format.

My headache just keeps getting worse. \:\)

Nero should let you do that. I believe it's full featured for a while until you have to pay.

I agree, man. I'm glad I don't have one of those players, but I did help a friend of mine do the same thing a few years ago. Then the player's firmware reverted (?!!) and I had to do it again. Don't toss those discs...

I used a free copy of Nero to burn the discs and updated the player, weird, it didn't make the link work, but it did make the analog connections start working in 5 channels, so I'm leaving it at that, I'm exhausted.

I told him to get a PS3 and stick the Denon in the bedroom, he needs a Blu-ray player to go with his Samsung 1080p LCD and if he wants SACD the playstation does a pretty good job of it.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm done, time to enjoy whats left of our trip to the coast.

Well Michael, looks like I won't have to undergo the torment of studying the Denon 3910 manual. Don't follow how the attempted d-Link update changed things, but on the original problem I note that you said you set the 3910 to "multi channel". You may have done it, but there're two player settings that are necessary to get multichannel sound from SACDs(assuming that the particular SACD isn't stereo only): an SACD setting to read the multichannel rather than the stereo track; an audio output setting to output multichannel rather than stereo. If both weren't set multi, that might explain the original stereo only output.

So you didn't get the option to switch to dlink3? You do actually have to change the setting; it retains denon link 2 as a possibility on the setup page.

John it does seem strange, but to my knowledge I did nothing different after updating the player.

Ken, on the 3808s menu it just says Denon link as an assign option, I remember my old Denon 3805 used to specify it as Denon link 2 in the menu. I'll probably give it one more shot before I head home tomorrow.

Guys, I have to apologize for being a frickin idiot. After reading Ken's comment

I realized I hadn't gone back into the 3910s menu. Well whaddya know there is my option for Denon link3, now everything is working as it should I'm still not sure why the analog started working after the update. But once again I am eternally grateful to you guys for solving this for me. It's nice to know I've got somewhere to go for those audio emergencies. \:\)

Oh good! Now you'll just have to wait a few weeks for that phone call saying, "My SACDs don't work again!" ;\)
