Didn't you beat me to a post earlier today?
Yeah, I said that the Contest thread should be locked right before you did... guess we surf the forums at the same time or something.
So we're even................
At the Moment!!!!!
so the ps3 is sacd capatible ? then i guess the only othe question is sacd vs dvd audio
Both SACD and DVD-Audio discs were something of a failure from a marketing standpoint. Sales decline each year.
My understanding is that SOME PS3s play SACDs....but not all models do. Someone with more knowledge than me will chime in soon!
None of the PS3 models sold in stores today play SACD's to my knowledge.
i looked it up all the new 80g 2.0 versions do play sacd's
I don't know. According to the PlayStation 3 Wikipedia page, the earlier 80 GB systems play SACDs, but the newer 80 GB systems do not. I guess just look on the boxes for the SACD logo to verify.
hmmmmm.. just checked my 80 gig ps3 box and it didn't say anything about SACD. Are you sure? I am almost positive they dropped that along with hardware emulation.
The 80gb Metal Gear Solid bundle from the summer has SACD capabilities. I believe after that one they stopped including it.
thats the one i have i thought it was still current
i dont think the newest 160g pays them but they still sell the 80g metal gear solid package
Ah..... Mine is not the metal gear solic package- just plain ol' original flavor hear.
A buddy of mine just bought an 80GB PS3 and it plays SACD as I lent him my DSOtM disk to try it out.
However, I wasn't sure how to identify a new version from an old version like mine so it may mean nothing.
Yeah I don't have any SACD's...
Hpwever, I'm assuming that it would be listed on the box along with everything else (DTS HD MA, Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, Bluray, WiFi ready, ect.)
This
matrix on Wikipedia shows what each version does.

some of the earlier models played SACD but for some reason Sony took it out of the later models...given that Sony invented SACD(?) seems like even they don't believe in SACD, too bad, could have have been a contender! could have been something!
Remember, Sony was losing money on every one of the PS3's so there were some cuts made to make it more profitable. The SACD function was one of the first frills they cut. Don't know the technical aspects well enough to understand the cost savings, but you would think it was a hardware change as the software and firmware are essentially free. But I agree, it is odd that after the long SACD v. DVD-A battle, Sony just gave up. The PS3 put BR over HD-DVD and could have kept SACD alive, even if only in the audiophile realm. (Of course any self respecting "audiophile" would want a stand alone unit, right?) Then again, this is good news for used PS3 sales, the old models have some frills the new models can't get!
