I will "probably" not need this advice but, I found out that my receiver doesn't have pre-amp outs (other than the sub) so I will not be able to add a power amp to this setup if I ever want to. Might not be a bad thing since I won't be able to have upgradeitis on my amp section without throwing away the money I spent on this receiver. I still have some time to return it but the next model up is too much for me to go for.

It looks like you already have your answer.

I really don't think you will NEED the preouts, my 1804 drove the M80s to 100db not as cleanly as the 3808 but it could do it. The 2309 is just fine.

As far as not having upgradeitis, it hits you when you least expect it, especially when you realize the 2309 will work great for that second system in the bedroom or livingroom, etc.

"I kept the 60s for a little while but because of numerous bodily threats for not being a member of the 80s posse I kept the 60s and ordered a pair of 80s ... I blame that on Wid."

I'm afraid to get to know you!

This system is for my livingroom. I don't have a dedicated TV/HT room.

No need to be afraid, Rick is just easy \:D

Funny, I don't have a livingroom.

Bob, you got it right; the lack of full preouts can be considered to be an advantage in that it helps avoid the temptation to blow money on an unnecessary separate amplifier.
Posted By: BoB/335 Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 04:09 AM
So you think a separate amplifier is not needed. I have been reading elswhere on this site where many are looking for more power. I would have thought that 100 watts per channel would have been enough. Apparently not.

Kind of makes ya wonder why so many useless amp companies keep making that junk, Axiom included ;\) What a blanket statement John.

You see now that seems like a good reason to consider getting to know you as being dangerous.

Rick, note that I specifically limited the blankety nature(blanketyness?)by using the term "unnecessary".
Posted By: Wid Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 04:32 AM

But neither of us know if an amp would be "unnecessary" in this case. The only one that can accurately make that call is Bob.

I say enjoy the 2309 and forget about the lack of pre-outs.

That is, unless you live in USA and then you can call the folks at 6ave.com and purchase a 3808 for $1100 or less with no tax or shipping fees- which may not be much more than what you paid for the 2309 after tax (if you paid full MSRP at a B&M store.)

However, I think you have nothing to worry about- you have purchased a much better receiver than the majority of the receiver owners out there \:\) .

Sometimes you just need to enjoy having something that is great and not worry about having something you think is better that you don't actually need.

Whoa... Did I just say that? I better go to bed before I convince myself that I don't need an ep800 and an a-1400 amp
Posted By: BoB/335 Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 05:28 AM
Paid $599 for the 2309. Can't see paying twice that right now. Wish it had pre-amp outs though.
Posted By: Adrian Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 05:45 AM
Bob, the 2809 has pre-amps...in Canada it can be had for 799.00 Cn so you should be able to find one under 700.00 US easily.

Wasn't Unnecessary Blanket that concept album Negative Orange never released?
Posted By: CV Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 08:08 AM
I don't know, but I bet Linus would crap a Great Pumpkin if he heard someone saying blankets were unnecessary.

Us money is way opposite of your figures.
Posted By: jakewash Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 10:53 AM
Bob, I would CALL 6ave and ask them how much the 2809 is going for with the AVS special, the 3808 is $1100 with this special, so I would guess the 2809 is in that $700-800 range. If you really want an avr with pre outs just in case it won't suffice on it's own, which I think it will, very easily. Those that want or need more power have special circumstances, extra large rooms or just really like their systems LOUD.

Also consider the Denon 989, for all intents and purposes, it is identical to the 2809.
Posted By: BoB/335 Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 09:17 PM
I called 6th Ave on Christmas Eve and they told me that they couldn't quote prices over the phone. I don't really want to venture there again. (if you read my experience in another thread)
Posted By: jakewash Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 09:46 PM
That sounds very odd...I do remember you mentioning that now.
Posted By: Adrian Re: Denon 2309 - 01/07/09 09:53 PM
I know, alot of them don't like to price thru emails as well, which I can understand because if you are there in person, and it's verbal, they can retract it if you don't jump at it. Some of these stores leave a lot to be desired but I wouldn't let that get in my way if I knew I could make the best deal there.

Electronics Expo is another authorized retailer that offers the same price on the Denon line. I bought a 3808 from them for 1099 shipped about 6 months ago for my dad. (their discounts at the time on other models were very good as well, it'd be worth a call)

They $1496 for the 3809 and $998 for the 2809.

Well am now past the 14 day return policy for my 2309 so I guess I'm stuck with it. Thanks for all the help.

Seems the prices of audio equipment is all over the map. I'm sure in Canada it's partly due to the exchange rate fluctuations over the last year, could also be the Yen/US dollar fluctuations too.

When you feel you need either more power (or cleaner power) and are thinking of getting an amp, save a little more and sell the 2309 and then just buy a bigger AVR.

Until then, enjoy what you have \:\)
