Hi guys,

I came across the studio 60 V4 on sale today, about USD 1100, same as the M60. In comparison to the B&W 684s which i also auditioned recently, the studio 60 highs seem a bit less airy, and there was more warmth in the midbass.

What i would really like to know is how would it compare to the Axiom M60 which costs about the same price? Any particular advantages/disadvantages?

I listen primarily to heavy metal, but also like jazz vocals and instruments and high quality recordings. In my experience, speakers that are described as 'bright', 'forward' as they sound a bit too much with heavy metal at high volumes. The Monitor Audio RS6 is one example.

Thanks for sharing your opinions!
It's probably the quality speakers revealing poor recording quality of the CDs you're listening to rather then the speakers being at fault (bright etc.). I would never auditioned any speakers with any heavy metal music, but that's just me.
True, metal recordings do not have the kind of sound quality for auditioning. But if the speakers are going to play metal most of the time, i would need to know how they sound....

Anyway, on the Monitor Audio RS6, the guitars were simply 'in your face' and overwhelming everything else on Metallica's Black Album..

The Studio 60V4 handled the same material well. Any Axiom metal fans out there?
I've been pretty happy with my Axioms on metal. I'm listening to Megadeth on my Audiobytes right now. I've not heard anything on the M80s that stood out as particularly bad, aside from St. Anger.
The M60s do better with poorer recordings than the M80s do, IMO. The M60's are a little less detailed than the M80s. I would suggest looking in the Hearing Things forum for someone nearby to audion a set of M60s/M80s, if you don't find anyone contact Axiom and see if they can get a hold of anyone in your area. You may also want to consider the M50's as well which are cheaper than the M60s.

Ken what would your impression be of metal played on the M50s?
It was pretty good. I still like the M80s better. In the M50/M22 comparison, I think we concluded that the M50s were better for metal, though.
Dokken rocks my 80's, but of course you young guys don't appreciate good metal. \:\)
I don't think I've ever heard Dokken... sorry...

I tend more towards the Megadeth/Metallica type metal, less towards the Iron Maiden type. And very little towards the CoC type.
I can't believe you've never heard Dokken, wow.. They had huge hits in the 80's, and some in movies, especially Dream Warriors from Nightmare on Elmstreet.
Alanah Miles had huge *its in the 80s too.
Dokken! I love 'em, but not as much as I liked Don Dokken's album, "Up From the Ashes." Classic 80s / early 90s rock.
Oh my.... I just listened to some Dokken samples. *urp*
I listen to mostly metal and I'm happy with my M22s. They play clear and detailed in my little basement room till about 100db and then my ears start to distort.

I really enjoy my My Studio 60's v4 and I think there a quality speaker built like a tank lol, I think its just a matter of taste though when comparing its all about what flavor makes you happy . I've heard a lot of good things about Axiom and there M60's and I really dont think you can go wrong with either one. Good luck with your decision
At that price, I would be tempted to go with the Digms. You are getting a very nice wood veneer in the deal, and the M60 and Studio 60 sound very much alike.

Your friends will be giving you huge, um, compliments on your new Digms.
Wow, nice to hear that the two are very similar, i quite like the sound.

Problem is, i'm in singapore, probably still worth checking if there are any M60 owners here that would be willing to let me audition.

Thing is, the studio 60s are 2.5 ways while the M60 are 3 ways. Not sure if this is the cause, but i felt that the Digms were a little loose on the bottom end, even though extension is low. Again that might be due to the amp rather than the speaker. Reviews online never mentioned anything with the bottom end.
Oh boy, glad to know that Metal fans are still alive and well in this day of pop, MTV and R&B and all that.

I used to listen to a lot of Metallica, then i found Manowar. Very nice songs, awesome vocals and incredible live albums!

Well, in America anyway. She did have five top ten hits up here.
My strange sense of hmour was lost here...I wasn't referring necessarily to huge (h)its.
It wasn't lost. It just went in the other direction after we snickered.
Sorry, should have given you guys more credit \:D
And I didn't think they were that huge, not really in the top ten either.
But there were two of 'em. I always loved her voice.
I actually had to google some photos of her as I didn't really remember having seen any shots of her other than the first album cover.
