I am just putting together my shelving unit I am going to have my components in. I have two options for receiver placement, I am worried a little bit about heat.

Option 1: 3" air space above the receiver, about 5" to each side, about 6" to the back.

Option 2: 6" air space above (really I could go up to 12" if I had to), 3" to each side and 3" to the back.

I MUCH prefer to place it in option 1 if I can... Just worried if 3" will be enough seeing as how most of the vents are up there. I could wire in a fan easily enough but I don't want any noise from it.

BTW it is a Denon 2310.

Tater, I'll make a reply, although I don't have anything very specific. The heat generated will vary with how loud and how long you listen. Unless the unit actually shuts down from overheating, my view is that it shouldn't be a major concern. Try the 3" vertical space and see if the temperature does or doesn't get high enough to trigger the protective circuits.

I agree with John, you have nothing to lose by trying it out in the smaller area, if it shuts down then you know you HAVE to move it or add a cooling fan to the unit.

I'll take the opposite position, in that I believe heat to be the biggest contributor to the death of a component.

The question is whether it's enough room, and I guess like the other guys said the only way to know is to try it. The Denon manual only says "provide adequate space."

I hear the Denons run cooler than other brands, and the only time the thing will be rocking hard is during concert DVD's which I might watch a couple times a month. I don't really listen to CD's at home much, mostly movies and TV when it will get a break between action scenes or whatever. My speakers aren't hard to drive compared to most either. The nearest component to it will be the DVR about 18" below so I am not concerned about heat transfer from other devices.

So in short, I'll give it a whirl

Is the back of your shelving unit open? If it is closed, it is going to get really hot (Denon or not) as the cooling mechanism depends on proper flow. If it is open, then the bigger the better, but you may want to try.

Well, the I want to put the receiver ON the shelving unit, which is about 3" taller than what would be ideal. I built a little cubby for the unit when I built the back wall, which is just about an inch wider than the bookshelf but about 6" deeper for the wiring. The cubby is enclosed other than the front, but I did install the return air vent for the heater there right behind where the receiver will be, so it will get some airflow from that. There is a lot more airspace around it being on top of the unit rather than in it. There is no door or anything on the cubby so it will always be open.

If you don't have full openings front and back, I would personnally not put it in the unit. But there's nothing wrong with trying... just make sure you have a good warranty.

what does your Denon manual say? I think mine was like 4" of room around the receiver.

Well, I really don't have any other choice. The return air grill right behind it should help though.



It just says "provide adequate space". It doesn't really warn about anything too close, it just says keep away from heat sources and don't put anything directly on top of it. 3" top, 4" sides, 6" rear... Seems more than enough, I am just paranoid.

Interesting, after doing some research it seems as if the intake fan is on the bottom of the unit, and not the back.
