Is there any reason why the in-wall (flush mount) speakers would not hold up to the outdoors?
The Mrs and I were sitting on the front porch last night and *she* suggested that it would be nice to have some speakers on the porch, mounted in the soffit, to match (source wise) what we were listening to inside.
They would only see heat and humidity (95F (35C), 95% RH), no direct rain or sunlight.
You should send Ian or Alan a PM and ask, I don't see any reason this shouldn't work.
You do have very high humidity where you live, I just wonder if the gills would discolour or rust over time.
Please let me / us know what you find out, I'd be intersted in this myself.
Yes, I agree with Worfzara, I'd be worried about grille discoloration. I expect Ian will see your post.
Alan
Hi Scott,
Having such protection they could be used. The paintable Axiom InWall speaker models come with a metallic grille which you can paint and re-paint at will if discoloration appears. A coat of exterior paint with a high resistance to colour fading should last you several years - almost maintenance free.
I would be inclined to send the grill to a coatings specialist and get it powdercoated, or some other type of electrically charged coating.
I have access to several varieties of industrial coatings including powdercoating. I just need to color match. We'll be repainting our entire porch this fall - including new boards for the floor. We'll just throw the speakers into the remodel.
Are the Algonquin grills powdercoated or automotive painted?
You could also anodize, chrome, or black oxide it first, then apply your own colour over it.
Don't know if the grills come powdercoated already or not, but I think powdercoating pigments can be mixed to just about any colour to match your porch.
Scott's gonna powdercoat his porch! Cool!
What?
Solid idea on the speakers, Scott. Clearly, Mrs. Classic is a keeper.
That would be one freaking huge oven. As it is, the porch is 56' x 6'. We have a 5' wide swing at one end, so I'm going to put the speakers on either side of the swing rather than either side of the porch.
I also think it will be easier to match the paint to the grill color than the other way around... gonna have to play with this a bit.
And yes, Mrs Classic is a keeper! Not too many others would put up with my S#!t.

In my marriage, we're equally adept and putting up with each other's S#!t -- one occasionally more equally than the other. The pendulum swings back and forth so nobody gets complacent.
I'm often hit by the pendulum...
Is that a brand of frying pan?

That's F'in funny!
When you're single, the pendulum hangs free.
I'm single, and I seem to keep getting hit with it anyway.

Well, based on her expression (avatar), it's no wonder. I don't think anyone would be safe with that.
. . . Are the Algonquin grills powdercoated or automotive painted?
Hi,
All the metal grilles for all the Axiom speaker models are initially powder coated in black. If another color is required then an additional automative paint is spray painted over it plus a protective UV coat.
