I was getting ready to watch "The Patriot" on my system - was using the 45TX set to THX mode. Once the menu screen appeared on the TV, on the receiver I saw "DIAL NORM -5". This also occurred just before the movie started to play. Additionally, the sound was a bit on the quiet side - I accidentally selected the "-" on the volume control in an attempt to adjust the sound, and the sound got louder. I have since tried other DVDs and have not experienced this. Any idea what is going on?

The DIAL NORM... display is telling you that the "Dialog Normalization" flag of the Dolby soundtrack has been correctly acknowledged on your receiver -- nothing to worry about.

Personally, I almost never use the THX mode -- it rolls of the treble too much, due to the X-Curve Re-Equialization, which I believe is unnecessary on most DVD soundtracks. Just the straight Dolby Digital mode sounds better to my ears.

I have no idea what the heck happened when you pressed the "volume down" button on that particular occasion.

Thanks, sushi. That particular characteristic of the THX equalization explains why the dialogue has at times sounded a bit muted to me on some movies.
