Hi guys,

I'm wondering if it is possible to get metal grills for my axiom m60s? I'm asking because it would be helpful protecting my speakers from my cats and upcoming baby.

Thanks!

Hello Elsewhere,

In my decade or so working for Axiom, the only speaker ever offered with a metal grill was the compact outdoor speaker, a variation of the Axiom M3.
Try calling the toll-free 800 number and inquiring.

Alan

Or keep the grills off the speakers so the cats have nothing to scratch. The speakers look great 'naked'.

I wouldn't worry much about the kids. There's been tons of parents/kids combos on the forums over the years and frankly reports of any debilitating damage have been very rare.
In fact, i can't actually remember any at the moment.
I do recall someone's kid putting toy cars in the back ports and the occasional dust cover push in (easily fixed using tape to pull it back out).

We've had two kids plus dogs and many years back a cat, not one of our 6 speaker sets has ever been damaged. Both the kids knew how to use the electronics at age 3-4 and were always taught to be careful around them.

I've got some bent drivers, but the speakers also went through a cross country move, etc. Still sound great.

But only if he holds his head cocked at a 21° angle!

No wonder I have neck and shoulder problems.

Sleeping on your speakers in the back of the car while on a cross country trek is no way to treat your speakers Ken!
Next time, get a room!

Thanks guys. I will try the "no grills" approach and hope my wife won't object to the aesthetic appeal of this smile

so hypothetically, if say one of my cat's scratches the butyl surround for my woofer and happens to rip it, what does this cost to replace? I am most concerned about the woofer on my EP500 sub and the bottom driver on my m60's.

Honestly, you're probably better off with the cats ripping hte fabric grill than damaging the surround on a woofer. I'd leave the grills on.

An individual driver ranges in price, and I don't know the price on the sub drivers, but the 6.5s are something like $120 ea, last I looked. I could be wrong on that..

I would agree with Ken, but i doubt a cat would be interested in the rubber surround. It is a rather small edge and cats more prefer to find a large carpeted-like item to draw down on their nails.

The other option is to have the cats declawed if they are really into pawing away at anything whatsoever. There is a laser surgery available that is far less traumatic on cats than older methods. This also assumes that you are a responsible cat owner who doesn't let their cat outside to roam freely...
Cat training is possible but better if they were still kittens or it may consume much of your time.

One of my previous felines found the fat rubber surround on my Velodyne sub; however, a bit of glue fixed that & the grill stayed on after that.

Declawing cats in my neck of the woods is not done anymore - vets just won't do it...

The In-Wall speakers have a metal grille on a plastic frame. I don't have both bookshelf and in-wall in the same model, so I can't check to see if its the same plastic frame. But I'd bet there's a sheet metal shop near you that could fab up some perforated sheet ( for example ) that would fit the frame.

Thanks for this link. If I only had a sample of what the in-wall m3's use then I could use this to figure out what perforated sheet I need to buy and then I can make it myself smile

Here are some detailed pics. Click on any pic for a larger version. It looks like Mc Master doesn't have the tight hole spacing and large %open area needed for this application. I'd contact the nice folks at Axiom to see if they can point you in a better direction for materials.

Maybe it would be easier to change the covering on the cat:
