I want to build a flexy. though I can't decide whether or not to use MDF or something like oak.
Have been reading a lot about them {3 or 4 threaded rods and a 3/4 inch or more set of planks} I will also be using it for a turntable stand. My Homo Depot has rods that are 38 inches so I,m thinking a 3 shelver.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as my tool collection is minuscule and this will be my first attempt.

I almost made a flexirack, but I would have needed like 7-8 shelves, so I went a different route. There are a lot of design options and a lot of talk on AVS about them. They are pretty cool.

I went ahead and built my self one. went with 3/8 rods over the 5/8ths rods due to pricing, less than half the cost for each. 5 bucks verses $12 for the 5/8ths rods.
Had a Oak Captains Bed frame took out of my kids room super solid 1/2 inch wood so decided to recycle, simply cut the long planks in 1/2 and stained with black cherry Varathane now a beautiful 37 inch by 20 inch 4 shelf Flexi.
Surprisingly stable for only 3/8ths rods and the black cherry goes quite well with my Boston cherry Axioms

I personally never really liked the look of the flexy rack. Its concept is neat but unless you really think you'd be changing your equipment all the time and think that having adjustability is that important. As long as all the force is downwards all the time you are safe, but offset the load and things can come crashing down rather quickly.

I have changed some things of mine but am pretty confident now that what I have is what is going to say for quite a bit so I made mine solid. Floating tempered glass shelves, but put some thought into how to keep the wiring neat, and structured channels for the to run down.

now I have to start thinking of putting up the rest of the baseboards and getting somewhere to store my boxes that I want to keep

Top notch saw it in the got wood thread.
Mine doesn't look quite so pro made. while making mine I didn't think 24" by 24" M.D.F. were big enough for my needs as I plan to use it for a Fluance RT81 turn table. By going with a 37" width and a 20" depth it is surprisingly stable even with the thinner 3/8th rods.
Also it was a great way to avoid watching another day of Big Bang Theory with the wife{never liked the show} even though it's on all the time like "Friends".

Now I just have to figure out how to get photos on here

The rack photoed above is the version 2 of the rack that I made for the basement media (mans) room. I took what I figured was wrong with the first one I made for the main floor family room and corrected.

What I found was that the glass panels are 18"x18" that is fine for some equipment but that really is not deep enough. Where I ran into issues is with the speaker plugs on the back of my amps, I was squished up to the back leg that supported the glass. What I made different was I didn't put any cut onto the back leg to support the glass, it is all on the horizontal wood bars that run from the front lets to the back. Also be leaving more of a gap behind the glass allowed for two separate channels for cables / interconnects to run.

DO you have any more details on this build? I am quite interested in it and am needing to build one.

Check out youtube and google there are lots of ideas, though for the most part it's find the design or designs you like most and try to duplicate it.

If it's your first time be very patient, as the stand in the pics. would be very expensive if it was a store purchase.

The tempered glass shelves were $35 each from a local glass store, and as I have 6 shelves, the cost does add up The top shelf I managed to rescue from a kijiji sale ($50) but to buy it new from a glass store would have been well over $200

When I was looking at those rather expensive cabinets at the high end audio stores, I couldn't help but notice how wobbly they are.
