We'll have fiber optic to our home this fall.
I'm pretty sure my current router is already limiting our up and down speeds.
I really want HD video streaming and glitch free gaming.
I'm hoping someone can recommend a reasonably priced 5G or better unit that's available from Amazon.ca.
I'd expect to spend a fair bit of cash, hate to get the wrong one.

What speed will your fiber be?
What's the network topology? (ie, when you say router, do you mean a second router after the ISP's provided router? Or does the ISP not provide a router?)
What physical interface will the fiber have? (coax or ethernet)
What do you mean by 5G?
Is this specifically for wireless?

You probably want a switch not a router.

Will you use only WiFi? Only UTP? Or both?

It looks like the 25 Mbps download and 5 up plan is the same price as I pay now (after the deal expires). If you actually got those speeds it would be 5 times faster for downloads and 6 or so times faster for uploading.
There's no network now just a line in to the wifi router and switch.
I honestly don't know a lot about it, just plugged it in ( copied a setup at the office) and connected my AV components.
The AVR, PS4, Bluray player are all wired.
There are 4 of us using wifi daily and often a few guests throughout the day. 3 tablets going and 2 cells phones connected for emails and surfing.
I'd assume Telus provides the main router and I see they'll sell you a wireless extender if wanted.
I wonder if I can relocate the one I have upstairs where we're using wifi and just use their system wired down in the cave.
I'd assume they'll use Ethernet from their box outside the house to the router but I don't know.

Typically they tend to use COAX as it's easier to connect all through the one line with splitters. My self I've always gone with lynksys for my routers you can often find their top line units around $100 or so. The set up is quite easy, install the disk and it even gives you a starter home group name and password. To which you can easily access and change to your liking.
Though if you go through your providers service they'll do the whole set up for you, with their own router.

I have co workers who are now on fiber optic and they're pretty impressed.
I just want reliable highspeed that I can watch movies with, no glitch no worries.

Check with your provider first they may have a cheaper option than you purchasing your own high speed router.
Most people here on the west coast have great results with telus for the net, though they all tend to hate the cable. To many fees for regular channels and frequent dropouts, though they prefer the internet services.

Thinking about dropping my satelitte service and adding a google dongle thing.
Middle of the month they're supposed to be knocking on the door.
A family member just signed for phone,tv and internet. They get a free 49" tv and they're gonna save $40 a month.
As an added bonus they'll finally be watching HD content on their killer flat panels. Such a shame, all these years...

I'll leave router advice to others with the experience, but I'll offer one option/suggestion.

For reference I am on Bell Fibe(r) and have a 25 down, 10 up plan. I reliably get better than 25 down whenever I do speed tests. However I still occasionally get buffering issues or noticeable video compression artifacts when streaming.

The suggestion - Using PS3 you can still download movies from PS Store in full blu-ray quality to the HDD of the PS3. PS4 will not let you do this unfortunately. So, well before we watch, I download the full file to ensure full HD quality. This reason alone is enough for me to keep my PS3 around, even though Santa brought a PS4 last Christmas!

Your ISP connection is only part of the equation, the servers serving out the data stream may also slow things down and cause less than ideal quality.

Makes sense. Always a bittle neck somewhere.

Had a chance to see the image quality and wasn't impressed.
It could be their combo pack but I wasn't impressed. The 720p from Bell is much cleaner/clearer IMHO.
They still save money and it's full screen (ffs).
Our neighbourhood got knocked back a month or so. Still thinking about dropping Bell for all internet package.
Looking at the webpage recently I noticed the tiered packages had been removed, they're pushing the 150/150+tv+home phone package on 2 year agreements. Guess it'll come down to getting what I want before switching...

I had asked Telus, "If my neighbors are going to fiber does that mean I could possibly get higher down and upload speeds with what I have?". They couldn't confirm if I would or if I might be able to upgrade without any agreements and or real physical changes to what I already have.

Speed test still confirm 5 down and (less than) 1 up. Guess I'll have to be patient.
