Well, I am seeing plenty of posts on the 22's, 60's and 80's, but little on the 50's. I am thinking of getting these to begin my new home theater system.

How do these compare to, specificly, the 22's? Same basic sound but a little deeper bass(larger cabinet)?

If you're going to get towers, I'd get the M60s. I had a pair of M50s and they were very nice, but somehow unremarkable. I liked my M3Tis and M22-like Michaura M55s better than the M50. A nice speaker, but I found it disappointing.

Jimmy,
I currently own M50's. I have gone back and forth many times about upgrading to the 60's but I keep coming back to one thing. The 50's sound pretty damn good to me. I'm sure the 60's are an improvement (I would hope seeing as they are the next level up) but I bought what was right for my budget and I really have no need to upgrade except for attempting to satisfy my urge to go bigger and better. If you were to go with the 50's for one reason or another, In my opinion, they are an excellent choice.

I have M50s, M22ti's and Michaura m55's. I am very happy to have them all.

I often wonder about the M60's because they are so prefered on this forum. I wonder how many have really compared M50's and M60's. I find that what I prefer depends on what I am listening to. I will think the M22's sound great in the bedroom and then listen to the M50's in the living room and think they are more satisfying. There are many factors to consider. room accoustics, positioning options for the speakers and the listener(s), source material. I don't think I will ever know if the M60's are really more satisfying unless I could have a pair in the exact position I have the M50's in.

I will say that I would take the M50's over the M22's for listening from a fairly direct comparison. When I had the M50's in the bedroom I think they gave somewhat more presence to the music. I am also totally satisfied with the M22's sound. Their much smaller size in the bedroom is better functionally and never leaves me wanting.

I initially chose the M50's based on the closeness of price when I added the cost of stands to the M22's. We liked them so much during the time we had them in the bedroom before the surround receiver arrived for the living room, we ended up buying the M22's at the outlet to fill the hole when we moved the M50's.

You are one of the few I've read about here that owns 22's and another model that's NOT a 60!

I'm curious, though - do you use a sub with your 22's?

Thanks!

I originally went with the M50's as a replacement for Paradigm Monitor 7's. Thought the M50's were definately superior. I then purchased a pair of M80's as my mains and am using the M50's as surrounds now (overkill).

A friend of mine has M22's and M60's, I think your right on with the 50's being a little deeper on the bass. Maybe not as accurate on vocals with the dual 6.5 vs the 5.25's. Anyways, its a great speaker if you prefer a floorstander over a bookshelf.

Love the M80's though, IMO i find them better than the M60's.

No I don't have a sub in either system. I have been considering trying a sub but the WAF is an issue at this point. Very hard to convince her of the need. Even adding a center and surrounds were issues. She doesn't like loud, meaning above moderately low. I am slowly breaking in her ears. Never having listened to a system with a sub I may not know what I'm missing. I'm looking for some good organ recordings that would lead to the aquisition of a sub since she loves organ music.

Wow, again I'm smiling when another brother out there is a "speakerseeker" and concernded (as I was a month ago) about peace in the family! I thought seriously about the M50's but between this site and when I called Axiom and spoke with Joe (tech support) and he said the M60's are almost undecernable from the M80's yet are 8 ohm impedance, I went that way with the HSU sub. What amazes me is that you don't really have to have it "loud" to enjoy it (although I do crank it up when the better half is out :-). I might recommend Vivaldi's 4 seasons or some Alison Krause & Union Station - the accoustic bass really comes alive even at low levels here! And as a bonus, home theater is fantastic too! Good Luck.

Hi md55,

Get hold of this CD on the Gothic label: The Transcriber's Art (Gothic G49054). It's a superb organ recording of the Woolsey Hall organ at Yale University. Wonderful deep pedal tones that are spectacular on a good subwoofer. Try track 9. I've used this disc for years for subwoofer tests, and we keep a copy at Axiom.

Gothic is a small California-based label that makes only pipe organ recordings, certainly among the best I've heard. Many organ recordings don't capture the power of deep pedal tones; they often sound mushy or undifferentiated. This disc is very different. On a good subwoofer, you'll be able to follow the pitch of each pedal tone using this disc.

Regards,

Just ordered it. I've been looking for a good organ recording.

I've heard many good things about the not-pulically-available organ recording on the demo CD included with Hsu subwoofers, too. Something by Saint-Saens.

In addition, Peter, the Saint-Saens 3rd Symphony(known as his "organ" symphony because of the prominence given to it)might interest you. My favorite is Maazel with the Pittsburgh Symphony(includes several short works)on Sony 53979, which is in stock at several of the SF area Borders for about $9.

Another organ CD is the one suggested by SVS available here . The rationale, as I understand it, is that it'll destroy the listener's present sub and require that he buy a new SVS.
