So I replaced my M22s with M5s - yea! But now I have the M22s sitting idle. Selling them is out of the question, so I was thinking of putting them out on the back porch. It's covered, but driving rain gets through the screens when the wind kicks up. I was thinking of covering them with something waterproof when they're not in use. And they'd just be out during the warmer weather.

So, what do you think? Has anyone used them this way or am I all-but condemning the M22s?

My other option is using them as surrounds in my music system (I like all-channel stereo). But my room is small (12x13) so it feels like overkill. (I currently have very old mini-Advents as surrounds.)

I've never done it but if you cover them with thick poly and point the opening "down", they ought to be OK. Put a drip loop on the wire connections s a precautionary measure.

Cork, was there no option to trade the M22's in on your new M5's?

I've never heard of a drip loop - cool! And thanks!

I didn't bother checking for the trade-in price, I liked these too much. (Plus, as I've ranted about elsewhere, I like the v2 M22 better than the v4 version, so they're "irreplaceable" for me.) I'll find a use for them one way or the other.

You know...I wasn't gonna tell you about the drip loop. I figured that's just common knowledge. But, as demonstrated, common knowledge is yet another cognitive bias. So that makes me flawed but I still know lots. Lots more than I always give me credit for. Damn, I'm pretty effin' smart!

So I finally put up the M22's out on my porch (with a drip loop!) - and they're awesome! The openness seems to be a positive, which really surprised me; or maybe it's just different, and that sounds interesting to me. Either way I'm extremely happy.

I was worried about power and stereo separation after reading Andrew Welker's blog post, https://www.axiomaudio.com/blog/outdoor-sound-system, but that's not even close to a problem (using an older Yamaha HTR-6230). I pointed them at the house (so one wall to bounce off of) because they're more for me to sit and look at the trees and listen to good music than for being in the pool. But sound at the pool is great (pool's another 15-60 feet away. I'd say the sound from the M22s facing backward is better than that of my N2 sitting near the pool.

One last item, which was really the point of the post - I installed the M22 upside down, so the tweeter would be closer to the correct location (since I hung them near the porch roof-line). Does anyone think there's any structural problem with hanging upside down?

No structural problem.

Speakers free of boundaries sound amazing.
