Greetings,

I am building 2.1 system for music only. Considering M5HP or Aria 906.
One of my concerns is that I have about 20wpc amp for the speakers.
Axiom lists the sensitivity as 87/90 on the website. However, the Soundstage measured them about 83-84.
Any feedback form the current users? Do they like more power than that?
I do not listen to anything over 80-85dB, and my listening area is about 25 sqM, about 250 sqFt. However, I like classical music, which has lots of peaks at all frequencies, and may put strain on the amp.

Thanks

Yes. More power required.

M2s with a sub would work better with a lower watt amplifier.

In that size room you could use M5s, skip the sub, and buy a more powerful amplifier or powered M5hps. My thought anyway.

Sophie, the Soundstage measurement cannot be trusted under 150Hz. I also think the tweeters of the M5 as measured by Soundstage were not at room temperature. The impedance curve is suspect and that's likely the reason. The tweeters are cooled with ferrofluid and if they were sitting out in a car in the winter, the ferrofluid would become more viscous. This would affect the response.

I trust the Axiom measurements more because Ian calibrates the anechoic chamber to the readings he takes from the 100 foot tower outside the factory. He also makes sure the tweeters are at room temperature.

Note the Aria is not a 3-way like the M5. I expect the M5 will reveal more detail. I also expect the M5 is more dispersive so you will have a wider and deeper soundstage. I expect the Aria to have a "softer" sound which many like but it's almost like having a veil over the speakers.

I have the M5OW in my living room and I've also tried the M5 bookshelf in there. I sit 10 feet away from them in the living room. No joke my nominal listening level is about a half watt. They make great music.

You can read my thoughts at this link. I also have a review of the M5 on the product page. It's the long one.

Thank you for the feedback!

Sophie, you're welcome. It would be good to find out which way you went and what you think of the speakers you choose.

Hello everyone! I just traded in my old M60's V2 for M5HP's. I reviewed this site on opinions and read the reviews. Am I missing something. I really liked my 60's and have had them for years. From an aesthetic standpoint I chose the 5HP's and I do have 2 subs already in play. I have yet to receive the new speakers, so I'll be interesting on any takes.

Zocco, I suppose you are the only one that can answer that for your ears-brain. The cool thing is that you can A/B them and if you don't like the M5s, punt them back to Axiom.

No doubt in my mind between M5 and v2 anything. The M5s are simply better. I take the M2 over my M80v2 also.

Ok appreciate it Mojo! Can't wait to have them in my system.

What is going on with the prices?
When I look at the main product page, the prices are up 50% from a month ago.
When I actually click on the individual product, the prices are the same as they used to be.
Is that a glitch, or the prices are going up 50%?
Thanks

Sophie, I don't see the problem you're seeing. Axiom lets us know in advance about price increases.

I’ve experienced that too while window shopping online. It’s strange. I toggled thru cad dollars and US dollars too thinking it was that but the math didn’t work out.

I’m not sure why the website does that. There was a while when it was all the time and massive price jumps then it mellowed and then stopped totally.

I was using the “ wish list “ feature within my account too so I’m not sure if that played a role.

But rest assured the prices have not gone up. I’m looking at them now.

Gives the heart a jump as you’re getting ready to pull the trigger on something and then blam! The price jumps.

Interesting...
When I go to the main product page, M5HP listed at $1600 USD, and powered version at $3225 USD.
When I click on the individual speaker, the prices come back to 1080 and 2225.
Multiple PCs at multiple locations during the last several weeks, all from US.
I am glad it's a glitch.
Thanks

Sophie, indeed Axiom has some issues with pricing. I've found, at times, the 21 day discount doesn't show up in my cart so watch out for that.
Posted By: Kodiak Re: M5HP Question - 12/13/20 04:21 PM
I just tried an m5hp in usd from my iPhone. $1080 USD.

I guess just watch the shopping cart as you load up.

Sophie, are you seriously considering the wireless option?

I am seeing the same thing, in USD but not CAD, accessing from Canada.

On the /product page M3's are 897 USD/pr and M5HP's are 1620 USD/pr.

On the individual pages eg /m3-bookshelf-speakers M3's are 598 USD/pr and M5HP's are 1080 USD/pr.

When I first looked at the prices (CAD / Canada) the /product page prices matched the /<individual product page> price.

When I selected USD the site also flipped from "Canada" to "United States" - I was able to set country back to Canada while keeping USD and the prices were still wrong on the top level products page, so currency seems to make the difference rather than location.

I also went back to CAD and confirmed that prices once again matched between top level and individual product pages.

I have submitted an IT ticket to Axiom and referenced this sequence of posts, although I mis-typed 44073 instead of 440073 for Sophie's first post blush.

Website A/B testing.

Mike, what I meant - as a joke - is that Axiom intentionally set two different prices to see how prospects react. Companies often times do this to parts of their sites to see what works best. This is called A/B testing.

You all have to remember Axiom is first and foremost Colquahoun Audio Labs. Yup...Ian has been experimenting with our meat computers for over 40 years. laugh

not seeing it either. thats odd.

Rebulx, you're right. You, me, and Kodiak not seeing the problem adds up to an odd 3.

Don't know if this has come up yet, didn't find it. I'm waiting for the delivery any day now but would like to know, does the 5HP require a break in period? Some speaker manufacturers recommend long break in periods. Does that apply to Axiom?
Posted By: Mojo Re: M5HP Question - 02/02/21 10:51 PM
My experience with three sets of M5 bookshelves and one on-wall is that 30 hours of break-in is needed for the woofer and mid-woofer to blend properly. One of those pairs of bookshelves was broken in when I got it. I maintain someone at Axiom threw a party with them. I'm happy about that because I like my gear burned in before I get it.

I've said before, I have no idea what exactly is breaking in. You may hear a vast improvement before the 30-hour timeframe.
Posted By: Cork Re: M5HP Question - 02/02/21 11:32 PM
I haven't fully bought into the break-in theory. I've always thought that what was breaking in was your ears unlearning what you had and becoming more attuned to the nuances of the new speakers. I won't say I won't change my mind, but I'm skeptical thus far. As someone said on another thread, I'd love to hear from the pros in the guise of Andrew and his vignettes.
Posted By: Mojo Re: M5HP Question - 02/03/21 12:04 AM
The pros say there's no damned thing as the break-in I just described. My ears weren't breaking in because I wasn't home that weekend. I just let them play. And as I said, one pair was already broken in.

I always thought that was nonsense not because gear doesn't break in but because I thought no one could hear it. I also thought cable differences couldn't be heard. I was wrong on both counts.
