I am looking into getting a karaoke for my wifes Xmas present and was wondering if anyone uses their HT with karaoke. I plan on adding a mixer, CDG converter and mic setup. Would I be better off getting a dedicated or stand alone system? Are there any concerns of speakers blowing up?

I have no knowledge of these systems, but you should try looking for an integrated system that has audio outputs. Then you could easily connect it to your HT.

I have had a Malata DVD/Kareoke system for over a year now. No issues on overloading your system. You better off getting a system like this because all of the EQ and Mic setup is built in with the Kareoke/DVD system software. All you need is a set of wireless mics for $75 or more.
One more thing is that most of these players play all types pf format ... DVD-Audio and mostly all are Progressive Scan players. They are usually very cheap and have sometimes better componentry .... names like Malata, Shinco, Daewoo, Nintaus come to mind.
Go to your local chinatown electronics store. They will have a selection.
They look like these:

Thanks for the tip. How is the sound quality? Do you think a mixer would make a tremendous difference?

Some Kareoke software on the player does have built in equalizer funtions. Try the Nintaus or Malata.
Sound quality on your Hifi system will be more spectacular...since you are using better gear. My fiancee sings Kareoke on my Magnepan planer speakers. Thats when I excuse myself to get Tea from the Tim Hortons. A mixer will help...but I personally think not much.

Cool.. I found the Malata for a very good price. I will probably go with the player and mic first and go from there. Thanks..

No worries on speakers blowing up for karaoke use if you are a little careful. I have one of my DVD players (similar to Malata player) that has mic inputs and plays CD-Graphics discs too. I have a 2-wireless mic set.

The L/R (analog) outputs of the DVD player are connected to my Yamaha 1400 receiver which is connected to the M22's & M60's.

Definitely try and avoid turning off the mic.s when volume level on the amplifier is set to very high as this will create a loud popping sound.

Uh oh, someone said the K-word.

If you can find the Nintaus ... even better. I believe they are the OEM manufacturers for Panasonic. You should see some of their models...it is exactly like some of the Panny models. A lot of Panny's line has excellent DACs for audio and video. But the Nintaus is not as good on grey market Asia "kareaoke" and "movie" DVDs & CDs. Asia market is mostly copied DVDs or CDs. The Malata handled those platter better. One more thing. When you do buy those players make sure you get the guy to load up the menu and check to see if all the functions you need are on there..ie equalizer. A lot of these machines are upgradeable firmware/software. But is a pain to do. When you buy from the asia market retailers there is ususally no refund or support. If you are really are set on a equalizer look for the wireless mics that have the wireless transmitters with a EQ. I had wired mics and pretty much gave em away because it was never used until we went wireless.

Romy,

I have a dedicate HT room and I am using a karaoke mixer from Vocopro. I connected the analog audio output from my universal dvd player to the vocopro and the line out of the vocopro goes to my receiver (denon avr-5700) source input. The karaoke mixer has digital key controller (adjust the pitch), pro digital echo and 3 mic inputs. The sound is pro-like especially if you have HT quality speakers like axiom. It has very good vocal canceller too (from any source). You can pretty much play any music cd or dvd and eliminate 90% of vocals. I would also recommend their microphones. Very pro-like quality.

Well goodluck on you karaoke system.

Thanks Twelly,

I have to say karoake sounds pretty good. I ended up with a JVC triple tray and Shure Mic. The JVC has those mixing features you are talking about.
