If my television or monitor will accept direct Component Video connections, what are the reasons for or advantages of running the video signal from the cable box or DVD player through an A/V receiver or PrePro? I understand that the AUDIO signal may require processing for multi-channel distribution, but why video? Thanks for helping a "newbie".
The main reason for doing this is add inputs to your television. You also gain the all-in-one effect by just using one input on your tv, you will not have to ever change te inputs. Some recievers have video-up, where a composit signal will be transformed into a s-video, s-video into component. In most cases the AVR is just acting as a pass through box.
As a newbie, I guess nobody has asked you yet not to post the same question in more than one place. Some people will reply to one post and some to the other. It makes it hard for someone else with the same question to find answers in one place.

Now you know.
