I recently got a new receiver a H/K avr-430 right after getting it I wanted to go 7.1 So I ordered a full set of Axiom speakers. I love the sound of both very clean even my wife noticed how much better it sounded. My problem is this. When I turn the receiver to -15 and start using the SPL to setup the speakers I have to turn them all upto +10 just to get them upto around 73db. This doesnt seem right did I make a mistake on the receiver purchase? everything I read about the HK was that it was high badwith power and very underated. In the end I turned the my Main M22i's down to about 7-8 and turned the VP150 upto 10 to try to equal up the sound because the M22's seem alot brighter and louder than the VP150. Any tips anyone could give would be great. It all sounds great but not quite as loud as I think it should be and it worrys me that I have to turn everthing up to +10 to get 70ish db at neg 15.

Q, welcome. That's a rather unusual set of speakers you have, but that shouldn't interfere with level calibration. You discuss a manual setting, but you should rely on EzSet to automatically set the proper levels. If this seems too low when you started EzSet with the main volume at -15, repeat it with the main volume at maybe -10.

sorry I didnt make that clear when I posted it. I Have 4 M22i's and 1 VP150, also have two qs4's but they are not hooked up atm. I stoped using ezset when it was even balancing the speakers. it would put 1 speaker at 65db and another at 71 and so on.

Quik,

You didn't make any mistake. Just turn up the volume to -10 instead. I did the same thing for my brother hk avr-630. You couldn't have pick a better brand to match with Axiom.

quik,

Make sure to calibrated your subwoofer at -10 volume also. I use the sound and vision dvd to do that.

Back to the question of calibration. I have a HK525.
I tried playing around with EZSET and manual calibration
with the Sound and Vision. In the end, I just decided to
set the gain all speakers and sub to max (+10db) and adjust the volume. Just wondering if this is the right thing
to do ? With this setup, the only thing I noticed is that
on some movies, the dialogue is not as loud and I hear more
of the background sound and music. Sometimes switching
the phase from 0 to 180 helps, but I don't want to keep doing this for every movie. Can someone help ? Am I doing
something wrong ? Thanks.

Stevel,

If you have the SPL meter, do the calibration manually. First turn your volume on the receiver to -10. Then calibrate all your speakers using the receiver test tone so that it will read 75db on the SPL meter. After you have done that successfully, put in the sound and vision disc to calibrate your subwoofer. Start with the volume dial on the subwoofer at 9 or 10 oclock and leave the subwoofer level on the receiver at 0. Then used the volume dial to adjust the sub to match your speakers at 75db. Remember to set your receiver volume to -10 for all calibration. You can also calibrate your speakers using the sound and vision disc but I prefer the receiver's test tone, it is easier.
