Hello all,

I've been lurking on the boards here for a year or so and finally decided I could contribute something. I've yet to purchase my 1st Axioms, but it the process of choosing my setup I came across something I thought might be of service to my fellow board members.

I've been trying to choose what wood and grill cloth color combos I'd like. I know Axiom will send a sample for $10, but I guess I'm too impatient and stingy to send off for all the combos I'd like to see. My solution was to model one of Axiom's speakers (start with a v100 center for simplicity) and use the provided images of wood and grill material to create a good idea of what some of the combos look like. I think the modeling turned out pretty well, and while the real thing may look a little different this gives a pretty good idea of how a given combination might look. Here's the first example in Axiom's Sorrel Pear with Light Gold cloth.

Full size images can also be seen here: Grill On and Grill off

Now that I have the speaker modeled, its not too much trouble to put other finishes on it. If anyone is interested in a particular combo let me know and I'll try to put up a link to some pictures. Finally you can see what that combo looks like without shelling out $10.

Wow, nicely done. I wonder if axiom would be interested in your services You could make a nice little interactive "custom speaker" utility with those pics.

Only, to be 100% accurate, on the vp150 the front top and bottom edges are not rounded like that. I don't think there's a sinlge rounded "facet" on any of my axioms.

Well to be fair, this was all I had to base my model off of.

Of course I'd be more than willing to make a perfectly accurate model if someone would like to lend me the real deal! Let me know if there are any combos or particular angles you'd like to see.

No that rotating thing is accurate, but those two facets are flat, not rounded. If you look at the rotating graphic you can kinda tell on some of the angled shots. There's a very slightly rounded edge leading to the flat facet, if that makes sense. I'm just nitpicking anyway, your model looks quite good!

welcome kaylin,

nice artwork there.. good work. i ordered custom cabinets. i got the classic oak w/burnt sienna grills. now i know EXACTLY what they look like cause they are in my living room. but i would like to see how your graphics make them look, and then i can let you know how accurate your rendention is.

i would give you a fair and honest opinion.

Very slick!

How about the HG Birdseye Maple w/ Burnt Sienna Grill?

Thanks

Ok bigjohn,

Here's a quick rendition of Classic oak and Burnt Sienna.

not bad.. here is a link to the thread with pics of my speakers.

yours isnt too bad.. the wood grain looks good, but the grills seem too dark. they have much more 'pop' in person. i think in general, the color on yours seems to be a little dark. but as ringmir was saying, we are being nit picky, they look really good.

and just to add a little, i really like the color combo i got. they look great in my living room. even my wife thinks so, and that is saying A LOT.

Here you go BigWill,

Posted By: BigWill Re: Wood and Cloth Color Combos - 05/21/04 09:39 PM
In your pics, bigjohn, the grills have a bit of pink in them. Not the case in KaylinR's pics. (Monitor settings may vary).

Thanks, KaylinR. The grills don't look right with that maple do they?
Posted By: KaylinR Re: Wood and Cloth Color Combos - 05/21/04 09:42 PM
I need to work on the lighting a little bit, the grills are actually in the shadow of the speaker a little. Its make them pretty dark from that angle. Let me see what I can do.

Perfect change on the facets! That's just how they are.
Posted By: KaylinR Re: Wood and Cloth Color Combos - 05/21/04 10:02 PM
I added a few lights to the model. From now on I'll show all color combos with this lighting if no one objects. Here's attempt two at BigJohn's Oak & Sienna.

Nice work! Not to nitpick even further, but since we're going for accuracy, can you rotate the cabinet texture so that the grain runs lengthwise along the top and front, and runs front to back on the ends? That's how Axiom does it.

Boy, they sure look better with the grills off!

Okay, due to popular demand, here is attempt three at Oak and Sienna.

Are we close yet?

Perfect!

Now you just need to simulate both daylight and incandescent lighting.... j/k

Those are nice models Kaylin. As someone iterated to, variability in monitor colour settings are a big factor in what one really sees on the internet which is unfortunate. The burnt sienna cloth does not look pink at all and i suspect bigjohn's photo shot had a touch of red shift.
You can see pics of the Boston Cherry finish in high res (and in real sunlight) along with some of the cloths here in the Axiom Factory tour thread.
Home monitor calibration can make as big a difference as it does for one's HT screen.

Again, not to pick nits, but turn down the specularity some as well. Think satin, not high gloss.

3D Studio Max I assume?

Hehe... keep picking nits, guys. It looks like Kaylin enjoys the challenge.

Oh, and I'de have to say that he is winning...

Posted By: bigjohn Re: Wood and Cloth Color Combos - 05/22/04 11:21 PM
LOL, yeah.. i think kaylin can cover it. we just got a case of 'never satisfied', which always leads to 'upgradeitis'.

that final speaker pic with the color brightned and the grain going the right way looks awesome. really good job. i think it impresses me more cause i havent the slightest idea how to do it!

specularity. I see you have some experience with 3D modeling?
Posted By: ringmir Re: Wood and Cloth Color Combos - 05/23/04 05:13 AM
I had to write a raytracing engine for a computer graphics class in college...Needless to say it was a programming CG class, not a modeling class. I have had my fill of specularity!

In reply to:

Some? Umm... I'll say some is a bit of an understatement.

Day job's in broadcast graphics and layout for print, remember?

Beta tested Truespace, work with Lightwave and Maya on a regular basis.

Okay,

I've had a day or two to play around with combinations. So far I'm really impressed with the vermont maple and charcoal grill. Check em out.

Still happy to show any combinations that anyone may be intrested in. Just let me know. I may model a pair of M80's tomorrow if I have time. Thanks for all the replys guys.
