Dang! That is a sweet deal. Sounds like CompUSA is getting out of the HT racket.

HA HA HA!!! I RULE!!!

...or, more specifically, CompUSA rules. As soon as I read that post, I put the tennis shoes on, grabbed the car keys and I was off to CompUSA. The salesman apologetically explained that they only had the floor model available, and it was $179. Would I be interested in that?

...more maniacal laughter...

So here I am with an EP175 and a new HSU STF-2. I have absolutely no idea what I'll do with two subs. The logical part of my brain is saying, "Well, you'll sell the HSU, you moron. You've got a brand new $400 sub that gets nothing but killer reviews and you could make an easy hundred bucks." The HT part of my brain is saying, "Well, you know...you could probably experiment with placement and daisy-chain the two, and wouldn't that be cool?"

In any case, I'm off to pop in the Avia disc and calibrate the HSU. A comparison of the Axiom and the HSU might be fun.

I'm in a ridiculously small apartment (12x16 living room). What would you guys do?

It would be interesting to hear about the match up between the two.

Alright, initial (~20 minutes after setup) reactions:

The HSU is more controlled, and integrates better with my setup than the EP175. Not sure if it has anything to do with front-firing vs. downward firing, but it's more difficult to localize the HSU, which is a good thing. I'm just listening to music right now, but it seems like more of a seamless blend. Cleaner, I guess. I can't define "better", but I know it when I hear it...

...all of which kind of pisses me off. The nice thing about the EP175 is that the finish (Boston Cherry) is matched to the rest of my Axioms, and the EP175 is a tad smaller. Width and height are about the same, but the STF-2 is a bit deeper. As I said, I'm in a cramped living room and the GAF (girlfriend acceptance factor) does come into play. Now I've got this obtrusive black box where the EP175 used to disappear. I'm going to throw a few movies at it tonight (maybe Gladiator, Empire Strikes Back, U-571) and listen to some more music tomorrow. Right off the bat, though, I'm very impressed.

Now you know what all the buzz is about when people talk about the Hsu and Svs subs .Hard to beat at regular price neverless for what you paid.

Alright, a few days have passed and I've thrown lots of music and lots of movies at the STF-2. I've also done a side by side comparison of the two, and what I found is that the quality of most of the two sub's range is almost identical. They both exhibit pretty remarkable control and detail, and if I only used the EP175 for music I'd probably be fine. What the HSU brings to the table is considerably more extension. It rumbles much deeper with much less effort than the EP175, and as I said in my previous post, it's more difficult to localize. That would probably be less of an issue if I could place the subs anywhere else in the room, but unfortunately I'm forced to put them about three feet from my listening position.

So I'm selling the EP175. It's finished in Boston Cherry, and it's in great shape. I've already put up ads here locally, but if anyone from this board is interested I'd box it up and ship it. I'm asking $250, but it would have to be $250 plus shipping. PM me if you're interested.

3ft isn't bad at all, my SVS PB1 is less than 0.5ft right next to my computer chair. LOL

When I saw this I thought I would get right on it but forgot... What was I thinking. Well, I need a new sub like a need a hole in the head, but on Monday I started calling all the Compusa's in my area and found a floor model for $179. NICE!! Can you believe that some chump tried to come into the store and say it was he that placed the hold on the HSU unit. Audiojacking is not cool!

I STILL have not set up my Denon 3803 because my projection went out on me. I have been listening to a lot of 2 channel and I must say that I am more and more impressed with another brand I have. I am waiting to move my systems around to hook up the HSU unit but I'm sure I will be happy with it.

This past weekend I finally decided to daisy-chain the Axiom and HSU and see what it sounded like.

The limitations of my room's layout necessitated placing the two subs across the room from each other at about a 95°-100° angle. So already I've ignored or broken a handful of guidelines regarding sub setup. If you're going to run two subs, try to keep them the same make/model; if you're going to run two subs, they'll probably do better side by side; subs seem to do better in the corners, etc...

Well, I love it already. The sound is much more full and the empty spots seem to have disappeared. I may have calibrated the subs incorrectly - maybe someone can chime in. I calibrated each one's level and phase individually; when they were both set, I wired them together and left them alone. Are there any further adjustments that should be made?

My only problem now is that the EP175 had to go up against my neighbor's adjoining wall. I don't think I can keep the 2 sub setup with a clean conscience. But maybe I'll figure something out...

If you've got the subs and you've got the curiousity, I definitely recommend trying it.

So I've not bought any used audio equipment before and I know its a common practice as people usually take very good care of their equipment. BUt I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts are on warranty, specifically in this case, when it comes to subwoofers?

I've read that HSU products sold anywhere else other than their website and official retailers will not have the same warranty coverage. And I've seen these subs at AV sites, ebay, etc.

Is everyone just willing to forgo the warranty factor and take chances? Or are there ways around it? Gold amex with buyer protection? Paypal?

Feedback would be appreciated!
