I am looking for speaker stands for my son's speakers. The speakers are 9" wide X 8" deep. I am considering 24" stands. Can anyone tell me how big the top plate should be to hold the speaker? I see many that have 5 x 5 top plates. To me that is too small since it will only cover about 1/3 of the speaker's foot print.

Thanks

Have you considered buying/making a larger plate and attaching it to the top of the satnd?

Ray, good idea. I actually thought of building the entire thing, but I'm getting lazy!!! I was hoping to find a top plate that was at least 7" x 7" so it would be more stable. I'll keep looking.

Some stands are meant to be screwed to the bottom of the speakers. If you don't want to do that, screw a larger piece of wood onto the 5x5 plate and sit your speaker on that. Just don't let the larger piece of wood extend past the front of your speaker.

John, of equal concern to me would be the stability of the base. Too many of the stands I have seen are a bit wobbly. If you can overcome your case of the lazies (I have pretty much surrendered to that malady ), wider base configurations are easier in a DIY project.

The thing to watch out for is the "half lazies", where you have the motivation to make stands but not to make them as solid as they should be.

There are probably more "three pieces of wood nailed together" stands holding heavy speakers above our kids and pets than anyone would like to admit.

Especially if you have handguns sitting atop your speakers.

What the heck is that avatar all about?

Some of the stands are not much more than three pieces of wood. So, it seems easy enough. Where I get into trouble is having too much perfectionist in me. I'll want to use all of my tools (and tools I don't even own!).

It seems that the taller the stands get, the smaller the top plate is. This makes sense, since you don't want a large speaker sitting too high off the ground on a wobbly stand. If I go down to 16-20", the top plates are larger and that height will probably be fine.

It just sort of happened. One of the threads got hijacked from speakers to handguns (initially by someone else) and it occurred to me that there were no "guns & axioms" pics on the Internet (confirmed by a quick search). I figured I should rectify that.

It was time to change the ol' avatar anyways so I stuck the "guns on the m60s" pic up instead. Then it occurred to me that it probably wasn't anything out of the ordinary since half of the board members live in "right to carry" states and might have handguns sitting on their speakers anyways, so I added the Canadian flag to clarify things. It looked sufficiently odd and I had to get back to work so that's where I stopped.

Note -- living in Canada as I do the guns are stored unloaded, trigger locked, then double-locked inside a large safe with ammunition stored in a separately locked container. This was just a photo-op while I was cleaning them.

What's your address? Since you don't have a dog, I could probably kick in your door, grab your fridge, carry it out to the street on my back, load it in my truck, and cross the border before you got the first shot off. I'm out of Molson

My guard dogs are always on duty. By the time you stop laughing I'll have the safe open.

Ok! Ok! I get the message. Your Molsons are safe.

I ain't messing with nothing that has big, glowing, green eyes and wears pink scarves.

Heck, those two are giving us the same exact look that I get around here when a certain someone has PMS.

Hey... I just noticed.... With a couple of redish brown hooded cloaks, those two would make great Jawas (sp?? You know, the droid scavenging critters from Star Wars...) for Halloween.
