My son wants to buy me a Birthday present. I suggested a pair of M60s, which he informed me are about $910 over his budget. He wants to get me some speaker cables and banana plugs for my front speakers. He thinks I need monster cable, whereas, I told him I was thinking about some lamp chord.
Right now, I using some cheapo Phillips brand 14 gauge wire. He seems to believe in audiophile cables, while I don't think a change would make any difference. What do you guys think. I don't want him to throw away his money.
Have him get you a set of premade Axiom speaker cables. They are some really good looking cables.
Don't let him fall into the Monster hype. He would be wasting his money. You can buy bulk quantities of 12, 14, or 16 gauge speaker wire from most home improvement stores. They will cut lengths right off the roll. I bought my 12 gauge wire off of Ebay. I know a few people that have purchased from
http://www.monoprice.com and have been very happy with the quality. Don't let your son jump on the Monster bandwagon, it is grossly overpriced and no better than other copper wires.
What gauge do you recommend? 12, 14, 16? I'm powering M60s, V150, and QS4s from a Pioneer VSX-74
Looks like you beat me twice today Rick, your typing skills are improving.
Not one I have yet to get a good hold on
I highly recommend
Blue Jeans Cable I bought their Canare 4S11 along with some techflex, heat shrink wrap, and some nice banana plugs (Ebay) and made my own "fancy schmancy" cables. They look great, were fun to do, and saved me the cost of buying fancy ones.
Of course regular old 12ga would have worked just as well. But it wouldn't have looked as good or been as much fun.
I second the Blue Jeans Cable, nice quality, good looking and won't break the bank.
Seeing as it's a present and I'm sure he wants to make sure you get something really special why not go with Axiom bulk cable (it's a joy to work with,it's so flexible) and Axiom banana plugs.
I'm well aware there are cheaper options that will work but this is a present that he wants to get for YOU and it is a much saner option than monster.
Just be thankful it's not a tie.
Bruce, due to my considerable mathematical talents I was able to calculate that if the M60s were $910 too much that $50 might be acceptable. Since the Philips Cheapo brand is considered to be unsurpassed in audio quality, no change there would be worthwhile.
Rather than hardware, $50 of new CDs or DVDs(preferably classical, of course)would be something that would actually sound different. And Happy Birthday when it comes, in case I miss it.
Thanks John
It' near and odd and a 70s rock groups name commemorates the day. I believe they were a one hit wonder and the hit song was called _______. I know Jack knows both answers. Sorry about the trivial pursuit, but I couldn't help myself.
To support John's CD suggestion, your son could also get the 14 ga speaker wire and some banana plugs from Home Depot.
Thanks WID. I knew I was looking for thir reply but couldn't remember what thread I posted in
Hey, I just got a Happy Birthday email wish from the AVS forum. Far out, groovy man.
Well we don't want to miss out!
Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you........
I thank you all, with extreme gratitude. Now, all I need is a pair of M80s and all would be right with the world, and a new car.
Can't help you with the M80's or the car, but a very Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday.
Question.
If you had to narrow down your list to 1 item, would it be the car or the M80s?
Happy Birthday, Bruce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And another, Happy Birthday Bruce.
awright Bruce; and yet another one sneaks past!!
Happy birthday fer sure!! And many more to come!!!
Rich.
Happy birthday, Bruce. May your ears outlast your speakers.
I'd probably opt for the M80s. I could always take the bus if I could get the walker up the steps.
Sounds like the right answer
I don't know how old you are, but you are definitely wise!
Hey Bruce!
Happy belated Birthday!!
Bruce
Sorry I'm late to the party once again.
Happy Birthday buddy!
Thanks, everybody. It was nice to have so many birthday wishes. I got the birthday bug and ordered myself something. And it's all Alan's fault. Let's just say that I do like Logic 7.
Happy belated B-day, Bruce. So we will be seeing a Harman Kardon in your immediate future? Or perhaps Lexicon?
I have joined the HK ranks once again. Me likey. I owe Alan another thank you.
Logic7 is great, nice all in one setting that you can set and forget. Congrats on the HK receiver, which one did you get?
I chose the AVR 630. I won one of Harman's ebay auctions.
Sweet!
Bruce
Now that's what I call a birthday present! Good for you!

That is where I purchased my HK230. The refurbished unit was in perfect, like new condition. Haven't had a problem for the two years that I've owned it. Good luck.
