I've seen this a couple times, but i'm unsure of what they mean? Does sound just suck until you crank it way up?

This is in reference to the onkyou TX-SR600 receiver

Weaknesses:
Unlike Denon, the volume is not in dBs so you have to crank it up to at least level 50 for sound.

Weaknesses:
a. Why did Onkyo bother to include the 0-45 volume steps? The audio is best heard at 50 and above.

Each receiver works differently for volume control. Some have lots of sound right away in the lower numbers but distort halfway up. Others have quieter sounds in the lower numbered regions and just keep getting better the farther up you turn it.

Either way, I wouldn't let the audio myth that "volume control settings decide power output" steer you away from any decision. The Onkyo receivers are good at what they do. Yes you have to turn it up to 40-50 to get decent sound, but it's all good from there on up.

Ayien, that's normal for onkyo, i have ds797 and I asked same question before. If your 600 setup menu is almost same as mine, you can actually set the volume meter in db also like denon, just go to menu #4 preferences and then volume and then set the meter to I think "Absolute" and the default is "Relative" (or the other way around, i forgot) anyway just select the next option from the default.
