I just bought a universal dvd player that plays both DVD-A & SACD. In order to play DVD-A and SACD i need to connect the analog outs (5.1 or 6 RCA wires) from my DVD player to reciever. RCA is really just the connection on the end correct? If i buy 2 sets of the standard RCA Video/Left/Right wire bundles that should be fine to use for the Left/Center/Right/L-Rear/R-Rear/Sub connections between the DVD player and Receiver correct?
That is correct. RCA is the jack on the end and, up to a point, anything that gives you 6 independent wires from player to receiver will be fine. I normally find that 3 red/white pairs are cheaper than two red/white/yellow cable sets, just a thought...
I ended up using the Yellow White Red composite and a Red Green Blue component. Despite the fact they clearly used the same type of cable and ends (monoprice), the component was more expensive.
That's what's cracking me up about people complaining that the Wii and the Playstation don't come with component cables. Just use the composite ones and stop whining!
Right, RD; RCA is the plug on the end, not the wire itself, although it seems that the term "RCA cable" is fairly frequently used for a cable that isn't of 75ohm impedance, while one that is 75 ohms is termed "digital", "video", etc. The usual clue if the red and white color coded cables are different from the yellow in a three cable set is if they're obviously thinner. Some of the sets, as Ken mentioned, have three identical cables for both the audio and video connections.
As JohnB. mentioned, if three red/whites are less expensive than two yellow/red/whites, you can go with that. No particular impedance is required for analog audio cables.

if youre playing SACD cd's shouldnt the player have a digital out? wouldn't you want to use that? is digital out 5.1?
Unless your using Denon components, you'll have to use the analog connections for SACD. The digital will work for movies in 5.1 or music in stereo. It's the industry's way of making sure we don't "pirate" surround music. Instead, we have to spend more money on cables.
Brian, it doesn't work that way with most equipment. Companies are paranoid about perfect digital copies of SACDs/DVD-As being made, so except on some very expensive players which have a special copy-protected digital output, only an analog output of this material is permitted. So, in most cases six cables are necessary to carry the analog info, rather than one to carry the digital data.
