Last night we watched Phantom of the Opera (thanks, Theo ) and either there is a setting for lip-sync timing that I need to adjust or the movie was full of really bad lip-sync'd songs. Dialogue seemed to be timed OK, and some of the songs seemed to be timed better than others, but in general we all found this to be a major distraction.
Anyone else notice this, or so I need to adjust something?
Great music though. My wife and I had the privilege of seeng the stage production with Michael Crawford as the Phantom for the LA production years ago - the movie was a well done adaptation.

I used to have that problem occasionally on a older Sony DVD player I had. The problem usually went away by turning the player off and starting again. It might be something that simple.

I agree with framer. I occasionally used to have that problem with an old 1st generation Sony DVD player, but I haven't noticed it recurring with the OppoDigital 970 that I've been using for a year.

If your AV receiver doesn't have a lip synch delay adjustment, here is a crude fix that I used to use with the old Sony DVD player: go into your AV receiver's speaker set-up menu, and pull up the delay setting for the center channel speaker. Forget about the distance setting and just vary the center-channel delay over its full range (usually about 0 to 30 milliseconds) to see if you can fix the lip synch problem. I was mostly able to fix any problems with that approach.

I agree that it can be very distracting when lip synch is off.

This is interesting. My Denon does not have channel delay settings...only distances. Do other receivers have both?

Like everyone else, I had an older Sony DVD player with this problem. It seemed to only happen when transitioning to different chapters. Whenever I noticed it was off I'b jump back to the beginning of the chapter.

Drove me nuts, though. Spent more time staring at the actors lips and wondering if the sound was a nanosecond off. Bought a Denon and all is good.

Oops, my mistake. The distance settings represent the delay, since sound travels at roughly 1 foot per millisecond. My response dates me, back to the time when AV receivers had delay adjustments calibrated not in feet but in milliseconds. It was smart to change the AV menus to distances that automatically set the correct amount of digital delay for the individual speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1-channel setup.

I've checked several other DVD's that are "musical" based and I went thru Phantom again and it's only certain songs that are timed poorly. The dialogue before and after is spot on. I can't imagine that I should have to make timing (distance) changes on the fly. I'll rent the HD version and see if I get the same result...

I believe you are just experiencing some flaws in how the movie was edited/made. I've noticed it too in some various parts during some songs. I don't think it's your system if all dialog isn't consistently out of sync.

It kind of bugged me too, but overall I think it is a fantastic movie with great, dynamic audio that allows your Axioms to shine.
