Hiya,

New to HT and looking to purchase Axioms for my system based on all the great reviews here and elsewhere. I have a room where the back wall is covered by two bookcases that I can't remove. There is space to place the QS4s on top of the bookcases, about 7 feet off the floor. Is this ok or would it compromise the sound quality too much? Would I be better off getting another set of M3s instead? Any thoughts from the resident experts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think I am an expert, but here's my take.

The QS4's have a bottom firing woofer, so you can't really sit them down on a bookshelf. They do come with wall mounting brackets, I would suggest you mount them to the wall and leave a bit of space for all four driver units to disperse sound.

If this is not possible at all, I would look into either M2i's, M3Ti's, or M22Ti's.

They also come with little rubber feet.

How many rubber feet? I think mine only came with 4 feet (2 each) And I thought the purpose of them was to put on the back at the bottom to keep spacing from the wall equal from top to bottom.

I thought the feet were for this as well.

Hello dhorst,

At least one Axiom customer bought extra-long rubber feet at Radio Shack to mount on the bottom of his QS4s so he could place them on shelves. Another customer used some old speaker stands with platforms and used the longer feet to raise the bottom woofer an inch or so off the surface below. Both report excellent performance.

It's not ideal, and frankly, I've never tried it, but it seems to work fine.

Have you thought of mounting the QS4s on the side walls where they are supposed to go anyway? That's the way movies are mixed--with dipole/bipole surrounds on the side walls.

Regards,

Thanks to all the responders...

Alan, unfortunately my available HT space is on one side/half of our ~25'x17' lower level, so I only have 3 walls available - the 4th wall seems too far away to mount on and maintain good sound (plus I have the decorating constraints of my wife). The available side wall has two windows on it as well. I've been theorizing about making a solid-faced L-shaped 'bracket' to mount on the top of the bookcases such that I could attach the speakers with the included hardware and thereby allow them to hang over the edge of the bookcases at the back of the space. The rubber foot idea is very interesting as well. Could probably try both options and see which works best. Seems like the idea of using the QS4s isn't totally defeated and I get the impression from other reading that the surround effect might be better in my space than an additional set of directionals.

Thanks very much!

I use the rubber feet myself.Bought some extras from Canadian Tire which lift the speakers about an inch off the shelf.
I can't mount my QS8s on the walls just yet and there is no rear wall, nor any room for speaker stands.
I certainly haven't noticed any signficant loss in sound. The surround is still very enveloping.

I built a mount for my QS8's out of birch plywood to match the rest of my racks I built. I used the brackets it came with and hung them...check out the site...
