Hi,

I am having some difficulty with my setup which is an M60/VP100/QS8/EP350 with and Oppo DV-981 and a Sherwood R-672 receiver.

I have connected the Oppo to the R-672 using HDMI and have an HDMI out going to my TV.

But I am having trouble figuring out how to enable HDMI audio.

I am stuck without any sound coming out of my Axioms.

Anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong or need to do to enable audio ?

On the Oppo's audio setup page, do you have the HDMI option set to Auto? Also, make sure the HDMI input you're using is set to decode the incoming audio.

The Oppo's HDMI audio is set to Auto. The audio from the Oppo makes it directly to the TV but I can't get the receiver to send it to my speakers.

I am not sure I understand your second question..

Sriram, I just took a look at the Sherwood Newcastle site(not the most informative that I've ever read)and see that the R-672 features HDMI "switching". Now while this allows you to select between multiple HDMI inputs to send audio and video to your TV, it doesn't necessarily mean that it processes the audio part out of the HDMI cable and sends it to separate speakers, such as your Axioms. Unless I missed it in my quick check, they don't have the R-672 manual online, so I couldn't verify this, but you should check your manual to see if you need to make a separate coaxial cable connection from your player to your receiver for audio.

Okay, I googled the R-672 and found a brief description from the CES show that stated it had "HDMI switching only". Assuming that's correct, then as I stated, you'll have to use a separate cable for audio(except directly to the TV). Again though, study your manual and someplace(buried?)in the hookup instructions there should be an indication that when you use the HDMI cable for video you'll have to also attach a separate cable for audio.

Yes, I beleive the receiever just does switching, he will have to connect a coax or optical to the receiver to get the audio.

In addition to what JohnK and Sir Quack have suggested, check the Oppo's menu to see if it has a "disable HDMI audio" setting. You can use that if you do NOT want the audio going to your TV's speakers. I don't have the same model Oppo as you do, but mine has the above audio option in the audio setup menu.

Once you run either a digital coaxial audio (you can use any old coax RCA cable) or an optical digital cable from the Oppo's digital audio output, your Sherwood should decode any DVD's Dolby Digital or dts 5.1-channel soundtrack and send it to your Axiom speakers.

When the Sherwood has automatically locked onto the Dolby Digital or dts data stream, it should display that info in its front panel or on-screen display. "Dolby Digital" or "dts". It might even say "5.1".

If you want to play SACD or DVD-Audo hi-resolution audio discs, you'd need to connect the Oppo's multi-channel analog outputs to the multi-channel analog inputs on the Sherwood. Those would be RCA jacks labeled front Left, Right Center, Left Surround, Right Surround, Subwoofer (or similar labels).
