Ok, you all might think this was stupid, but here it goes.

I was telling someone how strong titanium was. I told them the tweeters on my speakers were titanium. So anyway, I pop the grille off one of my M3's, and I tapped the woofer to show him it was aluminum. He starts tapping it. He's having fun with the sound it's making... then, he touches the tweeter to see what it feels like. I told him it's ok, just don't jam your finger in, because it might dent the driver. Well, the driver got dented it. I freaked!

I took the driver out and very carefully re-popped the driver in place. It still, however, now has crease marks and minor dents. It seems to sound OK. Will this negatively affect the sound? Is it compromising the sturdiness of the tweeter?

The moral of the story is, don't remove speaker grille's on new years eve

Undoubtible the answer is yes, it will affect the sound quality of your tweater. The question is how much. I am guessing you aren't one of these anal audiophiles which would hear the difference (more likely imagine the difference) or else you would be begging Axiom for a new driver at any cost.

As far as it's structural integrity, I'll leave that up to someone else to answer. But if it were me, sure I'd feel like a complete moron for inviting my friend to poke at the titanium driver (which may be strong but extremely thin) no offense to you... but if it sounds OK then I would let it be the way it is.

anno_k

you are confirming my worst nightmare!

yes, it was stupid.. it was one of THOSE new years, you know? I only noticed earlier today just how dented it was when i removed the grille to dust it. I usually sit closer to the other speaker, so I never noticed it sounding different.

I did not mean to make you worry, rather pointing out that the difference may (or may not) be in fact audable. If you're still happy with the way it sounds, then by all means, forget the dent.

you have the veteran rank but you were touching the drivers for kicks! AHHHHHhh the humanity! knowing axiom they will just send you a new one for free if you ask nice. Or at least not charge an arm and leg for one.

Patchwork:

Why don't you get a new one? I bought a 5 inch driver after denting the 'dome' and it only cost somewhere around CAD 40 shipped tax included

Call Axiom. They'll send you a new one, probably for a cost seeing as it was your fault. One of the QS8's I bought came with a dented tweeter. They said they didnt' think it would make a difference but they sent me a free tweeter anyway because it's Axiom and they do that sort of thing.

Hey every one!
I have had my M22ti for about a year and a bit, as i seen when i first took one of the speakers grills off the tweeter was dented, I thought nothing about it but now i feel i would like to get a replacement but i dont know if it wil be covered or if that i might have to pay for a new one which i dont mind doing i just want a little info on this matter! and one of the woofers on the 22 has some type of glue on the cone its self its like an orangeish color i would like to know if this would effect the sound any?
Thanx for all your help!

hi Sean,

when I got my Axiom speakers, the first thing I did was check the drivers. The tweeters weren't dented but there was that glue. I just used a kleenex and gently scraped it off. I don't know if it will negatively affect the sound, but it is removable without damaging the speaker.
