I respect trust the people here so I figured I ask here first before going to far. I just bought an AVR 445. I am wondering if my unit is defective. Here is the situation: I have M60s, VP100, QS4s, and HSU 2.3 and Sony progscan DVD player. The DVD player is on component cables to the receiver and coax for audio. Everything works fine --except when I want to use the OSD (on-screen display). The unusual part is that the OSD is only visible when the DVD power is off. Then I can see it. When the DVD power is on, and all I see is the boot-up screen for the DVD player and cannot use the OSD (since I can't see it) but it does go into OSD mode on the AVR445 front panel

Is this normal? That is, I need to turn off the input to allow the receiver to be configured? Any thoughts?

Like I aaid, everything works fine -- I can watch movies in Dolby digital, DTs, etc.

How do you have the receiver hooked to the TV? I know on my 525, I have to use S-video to view the OSD. But I'm really not sure how they're doing things 6 generations down the line...

I have component going from DVD and then component going to TV.
Maybe I should hook up another output (S-vid or composite) from the receiver to the TV (just for the OSD?)

I have an HK 630 and the OSD only works on composite and svideo, whereas I use component for the DVD video. It's a pain in the butt, however it's also one of the very few things I *don't* like about the 630

The one thing I like about the S-Video hook up is that it makes me appreciate the component hook up that much more. Before I learned some shortcuts with the remote, the constant switching between video inputs while calibrating was a pain.

I noticed when I was shopping around a few years ago, most of the older AVR's(all manufacturers) never made the OSD available through the components, only s-video and composite. Only in the last year or so has the OSD been output over component on virtually all models and now HDMI.

Hook up the H/K with an s-video or composite and you will have OSD.

The weird thing is that he gets the OSD through component when the DVD player is off. That's kinda strange, unless it just hands off the video signal to the DVD input exclusively when it detects a signal.

I think what might be going on is the OSD is only 480i and the DVD signal, I will guess here, is in progressive mode, thus the TV won't display the interlaced OSD unless the dvd player is off allowing the TV to switch to interlaced mode.

I just emailed HK and got a response in less than 1 hr. This is the second time I have emailed and recieved a very fast response.
It turns out like you guys were right on track. Here is the official response
"Thank you for the inquiry. Your AVR 445 is functioning as it was designed. The video transcoding that works for the analog inputs gives priority to incoming component video signals.

What this means is that if there is a signal coming from your DVD player into the component input on the AVR, then the AVR will send out the component video signal to your TV instead of the OSD menu.

A way around this is to hook up either an s-video or composite video cable from the receiver's MONITOR OUT jack to your TV. You will need to bounce back and forth between inputs on the TV, but it would eliminate the problem you're having where the DVD player has to be powered off in order to see the AVR's OSD."

So I will change my connections and use a composite line for the OSD.

Interesting. I have a HK 635 and started having a similar issue after I bought a HD TV. Before when I had a CRT TV, I could see the OSD menu over component, but after hooking up the the new TV, I lost my OSD. My problem wasn't the DVD player, it was my Comcast DVR. When I got the new TV, I changed the settings to 1080i from 480i on the DVR menu. I did a quick test just now and set the settings back to 480i and I could see my OSD menu again. This is was done over component cables.

So, for others that may not have a composite or s-video cable laying around and have the ability to change the signal at the source, this is another solution.

A number of them do, yes.

My 36" Panny does, unfortunately it doesn't get any better than 480i through component. It was built when DVD's first started out and progressive scanning was a future feature yet to be thought of, a couple of years later EDTV and HDTV started to show up everywhere.

I guess I jumped from a 12 year old 19" magnavox to a sony 720p tv. I never looked at tv's much at all in between... never knew that.

what good would component cables do on a SD tv?

I think it's mostly better color.

Could also bethat the increased speed adds horizontal resolution with analogue signal. Would have to check.

Good question. My Comcast DVR came with component cables, so that's what I used. Never tested a S-video or composite cable to see if there was a difference.
