probably a dumb question but here it is...I have A Toshiba HD -Ready TV that has no HDMI jack. I received an "upconvert" DVD player as a gift. My cable box is my HD converter and has the HDMI jack... Do I need to directly connect an HDMI cable from DVD player to TV or will the cable box pass it to the TV?

Do you have some kind of a cable box with an hdmi in? The hdmi slot on your cable box is likely for output only.

Your best bet would be to hook the dvd player up with component cables. Does your tv have component inputs on it?

Also, are you using any kind of receiver or speaker system?

The problem is that most upconverting DVD players WON't upconvert unless you use the HDMI cables. I think the Oppo still does and a few others from the past, so most likely you won't be able to enjoy the upconvertinng if your tv does not have HDMI inputs.

My Panasonic upconverting player is having issues with HDMI output, so I connected component out to my HDTV and it works fine. Have to check if you player can output like Randy said.

The other option is to see if your set has DVI and use a HDMI-DVI cable from some place like Monoprice.

What he said. hdmi-dvi should do the trick... just make sure your TV is HDCP compliant otherwise it won't work right. And monoprice is good'n cheap
