I'v been looking at these 2 receivers for sometime and still not sure if the RXV-3800 is worth the extra money?
RXV-3800

http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Receivers/HTR6190B.jspI cannot see the differences in the 2 except 10watts and weight.
Any thoughts people?
I vote for the denon 3808.
Oh wait, thats not on your list!
I haven't gone through the stats for each, but generally speaking the difference between an RXV and HTR (or Denon's 3 digit vs 4 digit) are merely to allow big box stores to not have to worry about price matching.
I have heard the HTR series isn't as heavy because the power supplies are not exactly the same ones used in the RXV series but are just as powerfull.
Yamaha claims to use better components in their Top Art stuff. All RXVs are top art, not all HTRs are.
I have wondered the same thing about various Yamaha receivers.
I actually think its the other way around. The HTR series is there so that Audio shops don't have to worry about big box competition and Yamaha can widen its distribution.
Personally I would go with a lower end RXV of similar cost than an HTR series, more from the why the difference question than anything else. I do know that the triple numbered Denons are exactly the same as the higher number counterparts so far as power supplies go, the triple number usually lack a couple of key features the higher numbered ones have.
The RXV663 sure seems like a giant killer on paper.
It would be nice to see Denon add some of the new hd audio codecs to their triple number receivers. For something RXV663 like in a Denon line I would be willing to pay a premium.
For that price why not go prepro + A1400?
Yeah, at that price there's really no reason not to go separates. Sound formats and input/output needs will prompt an upgrade in a couple years. At least with separates you'll only need to upgrade the processor.
Yes the RXV663 has it all in an inexpensive receiver. By the time it makes it uphere I bet the 2308, well 2309 or possibly even the 2109, will have all the same features for the same price.
I hope you're right. I like lots of choice. Actually, I am beginning to think that I should pick up a cheap used receiver in the short term because we are just in the transition to Bluray and the new HD audio codecs.
I won't need 5.1 for another year anyway.
Sounds reasonable and there are a ton of really good ones for not much money. Try e-Cost.com for a refurbed one. I have ordered from them and no problems what so ever.
Just ordered the RXV-3800 !
Its almost double the power of my old HTR 5660 @ 85wpc.
It should do a much better job at powering my Axiom speakers.
Congrats, You must let us know if you notice any difference.
