I downloaded a couple of versions of the new Nine Inch Nails album this summer. I downloaded the apple lossless and the 96-24 high resolution. I was able to put both of them into itunes and get them to play. Will I be able to play (and hear the benefit) of the high resolution version on the 160 gig ipod classic. I will be using the line out to play it in my car stereo or dock it on something like the Onkyo DS-A2X to hook it up to my Onkyo 805. If I can't play it or even hear the difference because it is downconverted or something then I might as well get rid of it since it is taking up 1.5 gb.

Yes, your iPod will play back the Apple Lossless format just fine.

I know that the apple lossless will work just fine, but what about the 96-24 high resolution that is eating up 1.5 gb of space?

I don't think it will, but there's an easy way to find out. ;\)

I don't remember where I found it exactly, but I looked into this last year and all iPods have 16bits/48Khz DACs in them. You're probably better off using the Apple Lossless in your iPod. There might be "docking" tools that would support advanced resolution files (check the specs for your Onkyo plug-ins).

I'm asking since I just ordered a 160gb ipod and it should arrive in the mail next week. However, it is a birthday present that I won't get until next month. So, I am trying to get all of my music in itunes and get some play-lists set up so that I am ready to go. I also only have an 80gb hard drive that is almost full so I need to he careful about space.
