Hi guys, I have successfully completed the installation of my QS8's and am now ready to tackle Audyssey EQ. Everything is sounding very nice and I am extremelly happy with the sound from my Axiom system. I have taken notice to a couple acoustical issues pertaining to my room.

I went on the hunt for a tripod for the 3808's RTA microphone with no luck at all. I tried Radio Shack, Guitar Center, Best Buy and Circuit City. What have you guys used for a tripod and where may I find one? I looked on Denon's site but couldn't find anything.

I have a couple other questions regarding reciever set up. When in "speaker configuration/subwoofer mode" should I select "LFE+Main" or just LFE with my EP500? Does LFE+Main setting create a crossover setting for low frequency signals to mains and sub or does this setting simply allow sub and mains to always cover frequency range within the selected crssover setting? Hope this makes sence. Also, where are you guys setting the volume control on your sub? I am currently at 10:00 pre speaker calibration and things sound pretty good. The bass responce is not optimal but decent in the desegnated rear corner firing into the side wall. I say this because after doing the subwoofer crawl I found the sweet spot to be in my kitchen, whch is connected to my living room. The right rear corner is my only option for subwoofer placement as my kitchen is far too small for the sub. I'm hoping maybe Audyssey will enhance the low freq? I'm guessing the tweaking process goes on forever and the options are endless. Thanks for your responces and more updates soon.

I used my Dad's camera tripod he bought back in the '60s. Works pretty good. Hmm, I've seen tripods at Best Buy. Have you tried a local camera shop?

I am building a little stand for it, the audyssey mic, to sit on.

The sub setting of LFE+Mains simply means that the sub will be getting the frequencies below the main speaker crossover point as well as all material in a dedicated LFE channel when the mains are set to large. When the mains are set to small, the LFE + Mains setting is a moot point, as that is what happens any way, only then the small setting redirects everything below the crossover to the sub instead of duplicating it to the sub and letting everything through to the mains.

If you don't want to buy/rent a tripod, why not try this super-cheap solution? (I'm inventing it now as I go.)

Use a push-pin to secure a string to the ceiling and then tie the other end of the string around the vertical part of the microphone to hang it in the right place. A string isn't a significant enough obstacle to affect the readings of the mic.

I borrowed one form work and taped it down with masking tape.

My friend taped it to the top of my head and I drove around in my wheelchair to the different listening positions

Ha, that's funny wheelz! Well it looks like creativity is an option here and something rigged is the way to go. I really like the push pin and string idea, as it would cut out having to move all the living room furnitue out of the way. Thanks for the ideas.

I don't think you want to move your furniture, even with a tripod. the placement of furniture will have an impact on how audyssey creates the EQ curve, and you want that to be accounted for.

I just shortened the tripod up and stuck it right on the couch so the mic was at about ear level.

I use an old tripod for a refractor telescope I used to have as a kid.

Once you buy a tripod then you're all set to get into photography. Now you will have two very expensive hobbies.

Tip: Borrow a tripod.

Some have found that camera tripods are too bulky for calibrating their receivers. I have combined a microphone stand, boom adapter and an adapter for attaching the Audyssey mic to the stand: mic adapter rs stand rs boom
I have found this combination to be much easier to use than a camera tripod. The microphone stand may also be less likely to interfere with the measurements but I have no way to verify this.

Any camera tripod should work. You can even buy very small table top tripods, ones for holding small compact cameras.

That's actually what I use. I just prop it on the top of the couch/chair near where my head is while sitting and it works well enough. (and avoids the need to move furniture around)

Hopefully these pics will post. This is my creation for the Qudyssey mic. I think it worked out very well. The results that Audyssey produced are amazing! Is there a way to post pics directly viewable without using the "enter an image" URL. Thanks
