Well, I'm starting to understand the complaints about the Denon manual and complexity of menu screens and functions. Just started putting my system together and it's gotten a bit messy. Am I correct that you cannot run HDMI from the cable box and then component outputs to television? I wasn't able to get any picture that way. The tv is a bit older and has component and DVI. I can get picture and sound connecting component from set-top box to Denon then component to TV but can't get picture with HDMI to receiver then component to TV. If I get an HDMI/DVI converter will this solve the problem or am I better off just sticking with component until my projector (with HDMI) shows up?

No, running component outs off of an HDMI signal would let you potentially OMG STEAL THE VIDEO SIGNAL AT HIGH QUALITY! And that would be wrong.

that's what I've been reading. Thanks.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think you can do that. You probably just need to run component cables from the cable box to the denon.

You could also run component from the cable box to the TV and digital (coax or optical) from the cable box to the Denon. That way you can also use the TV without the surround setup, sometimes easier for the wife/kids. Then turn on the Denon when you want surround sound.

Ah.. thanks, great idea

I personally would just run the component for video + optical (or coax) for audio to the Denon. Then run a set of component cables to the TV.

It is very easy to turn on the denon and turn the left knob until the display says (DVR) or whatever....

I wouldn't run anything to the tv except the component cables from the denon.... that is just extra wires.

Why not get a HDMI to DVI converter and use the DVI input on the TV?

Just didn't have one so was trying to find another solution but might end up using the DVI. The component from set-top box to TV and optical to reciver is nice solution as my wife hates watching tv with stero on. This lets me enjoy TV and stereo and she can watch without. I need some lessons in cable management though as things are getting pretty messy \:\)

The only lesson that I could give you on cable management would be not getting married \:\) . It's worked brilliantly for me \:D ,i.e. one setup preference = one cable.
