Hi - I will be putting speakers on what is basically a low shelf. (In actuality, I'm installing the in-cabinet M-60) and will be building a shelf attached to a wall to raise them about 16 inches.

I had tought there should be a "hard" connection between speaker bottom and shelf.i.e metal spikes or something.

But I see that the speaker already has a sheet of foam on the bottom. - Which would seem to indicuate the opposite is needed.

I'm looking for advise becaseu it's likely I will have to add something to the shelf to tweek the desired hieght. Should that added material be something like rubber, or solid like tile?

Thanks, Scott

It can be solid since Axiom is already supplying a means of decoupling the speaker from the cabinet in which it will be sitting. It wouldn't hurt anything if you wanted to use another piece of high density foam or rubber to place the speaker onto as well.

thanks Jay ---

new problem - I cut out drywall - and found a dozen or so romex cables. \:\(

Orionally, I was going to raise speakers about 15" from floor level to set tweeter/mid at about ear level when sitting. Now - I'm faced with having to raise whole thing another 10 inches to clear cables.

The m60's tweeter / mids would then be ear level when STANDING.

I'm going the experiment with raising the speaker on crates to see how much than effects everything... but I don't like the idea. \:\(

Scott; Never seen anyone put towers on anything but the floor.
Ya sure ya need to? Maybe a sofa would be better than those barstools you stole in college and refuse to part with. Or are you 7'2"?

my ears are at 40"
*new wire-clearing center of midrange driver would be 60"

i'd be sitting ~ 11 feet away.

I raised one of the m60's and it sounded awful - the highs seemed to disappear from the raised speaker - I only heard them from the lower speaker.

But, I then raised the other. When both were raised, everything seems to sound good again. very good actually.

if I stand and sit down, and compare- it seems that things sound a little better when standing - a little more "live". but that may imagined.

what do I do guys? ? ?

i'm tempted to put in four junction boxes (two on each side of each speaker) to extend the romex... but that's alot of work.

on the other hand - will I be annoyed each and everytime I sit down to listen if they are "too" high?

btw. the top of the speaker cabinet is even with top of TV when it's in this high position - so it looks ok, and voice will be centered to TV, but it's not the ideal for ear height...

damn, damn, damn. (sorry)

Bob, he is installing the in-cabinet M60s, so I do not think to be unusal to have them a ways off the floor. I believe the original plan was to have the tweeters at the midline of the screen.

I would rewire the wall to accomodate the M60s properly you are already into it pretty deep a little further and you have what you wanted.

I and I believe Alan has posted preferring the tweeters a little above ear level. From some testing I just did with my M80s a week or so ago I found that they actually sounded best to me with the midranges closer to ear level. It greatly improved the ambience in 2ch music and improved the integration of the mains with the surrounds. I suspect is has to do both with the orientation of the drivers and raising the tweeters and midranges higher above the furniture so more of their acoustical energy is bouncing around the room before getting blocked and absorbed by the furniture.

Long before doing the testing I always proffered my speakers elevated I’m just trying to now to figure out why.

Duh. Oh! Then nevermind. But that did give me pause. I feel better now. Thank you.

actually - remeasured - ears are at about 32" above ground level when sitting.

If I flip the speak upside down (we'd talked about this ahwile back when I was thinking about doing this with some m22's that I thought were too high) then the mid range nearer to where it should be...

i'm thinking I need to re-wire. \:\(

if only axiom made in-cabinet m22's.... they'd have the dual mids at the perfect height when cabinet was raised above the wiring!

Are you sitting on/near the floor?? That seems very short, unless you meant 42"?

I guess I sloutch when sitting - sorry mom!

For those interested, I'm going to re-wire; relocating the dozen or so romex runs that are in the way.

I seriously think the M60's off axis performance is so good, that the difference (between having mids are ear level vs. a couple feet above) was suprisingly minimal.

But in this hobby, it's all about details, tweeking what you can, and taking pride in have done the best you can within your budget.

So, the exta effort (though my wife thinks I'm nuts) will make me happier in the long run.
