I realize that the topic of 4 ohm speakers has been discussed at length here, and I appreciate all of the insight I've been able to glean from this forum. What a wealth of information! I haven't been able to either put the information together to fit my scenario, or I'm just a little slow and missing something....

I've ordered an Onkyo TX-NR808 AVR, and am now replacing the old HTIB speakers to higher quality units.

I'm considering a pair of M80's with a VP180 center, but have some concern around running 3 x 4 Ohm speakers off of the AVR. I know this AVR is quite new, does anyone have experience with all three on a 807?

Should I "settle" on M60's and a VP150 instead, just to be on the safe side?

I "jumped" on ordering the AVR, and am already having second thoughts before even getting it, so before I invest a bunch more in speakers, I'd love to pick your brains.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Glenn, welcome. No answer carrying 100% certainty can be given to you, even if there was another member who had the exact setup that you're considering. Whether a particular amplifier is fully satisfactory with certain speakers depends to a large degree on how loud and how long they're driven, and this varies between users of the same equipment.

Having said that, the 808 is a quite powerful unit and should drive the M80s and VP180 to beyond safe listening levels(they're more sensitive and require slightly less power than average)in most home situations. In my view, there's no good reason to hesitate.

Thank you for the input.

I'll let you know how it goes...

Onkyo 808

2 x M80 v3
1 x VP180
2 x QS8 v3

= 1 happy owner.

The sound rocks, the amp keeps up and the wife is happy.

That's a win smile

Yes..congraz Glen..I have an onkyo 3007 with the ohms set at 6 and running the same speakers as what you have..and after 4 wks of use so far so good. The only thing I notice with my onkyo..it gets a bit warm after few hours of use..so just make sure the placement of your reciever is well ventilated...well enjoy your new speakers and welcome to Axiom

Very good, Glenn; enjoy.

For those not familiar with the Onkyo 3007 which DaMagic is using, 6ohms is the higher setting, which he's correctly keeping it at, instead of the lower 4ohm setting which reduces the voltage output capability and cuts the maximum power capacity roughly in half. Despite the required caution in the manuals, the lower setting should never be used.

That Onkyo is a great unit. The only thing you should be aware of like DaMagicman said is to keep the unit well ventilated. Preferably placed on a open equipment rack.

Having an Onkyo 707 I suggest running a fan with it to help keep it cool. If not the Onkyo units will run really, really HOT. Even if well ventilated.

My NR808 run pretty cool after a 9 hours non stop viewing in a Sunday, the unit have 2 big fan to the bottom of the unit and heat was never an issue to me.

I think Onkyo change their design a lil and the new xx8 models does not run as hot as the older model.

I had mine place on an open shelve btw....

I also have the 3007 running 3xM80s and either 6xQS8s or 4xQS8s and 2xM2s previously with the M80s crossed at 40Hz and the rest at 80Hz and never had clipping and only shut it down once just after buying it when I pushed it until shutdown to see what it could handle. I usually run it close to 16 continuous hours on days off.
