I have an Onkyo 807 and an OPPO 83 hooked together with an HDMI for movies and/or CDs and a pair of RCAs for analog CDs.

1. How do I know which unit is doing the processing? Is it the OPPO on analog and the Onkyo on HDMI? If so, how would I or anyone know that? Where does it tell me that? If not, then what determines the processor?

2. I never did adjust any of the speaker settings in the OPPO-distance, levels, size, etc. because they are set in the Onkyo. Do I need to? Are those the settings that are used when the OPPO does the processing or do the settings always default to the Onkyo regardless of which unit is processing?

3. If I do need to adjust the OPPO settings, do I set them independently of the Onkyo or do I set them the same as the Onkyo?

BTW, my setup sounds awesome so I'm wondering if everything is fine the way it is.......
My main concerns are knowing which piece is doing the processing and do I really need to mess with the OPPO settings for speakers, etc.
When connected via HDMI the Onkyo will be doing the processing. When connected by analog the Oppo would be doing the processing. But since you only have two cables, there's no processing required. So leave the settings in the Oppo alone.

Sounds like you have things hooked up, and configured correctly.
Isn't it also a matter of whether the Oppo is set to bitstream or to PCM over the HDMI cable? If it is set to bitstream then the Onkyo is doing the processing, if the Oppo is set to PCM then it is doing the processing.
I was thinking of processing as speaker delay, bass management, EQing, etc. Turning a bitstream into PCM is what I'd call decoding.

It is possible for the Oppo to decode without performing any other processing. Even so, the out-of-box settings should have it auto detect the abilities of the receiver and bitstream the raw audio data if the receiver supports the formats.
Makes sense to me..........now that I read it again.
Makes sense to me too now that I have read everything and thought about it awhile. Thanks.
