Hi guys,

Just have a quick question about the Audyssey setup. I ran the Audessey Calibration/Setup for my room using 3 different locations. Once it's completed and saved is my receiver now automaticallyusing it?

The reason I ask is I noticed that in one of the menu's there's an option for Audio Setup. Under Audio there's a selection for Room EQ which lists the following
Off
Audyssey
Audyssey BYP: L/R
Audyssey Flat
Manual

Right now I have Off selected. Does this mean that the Audyssey Calibration I ran is not being used?

Any help would be appreciated!

Daniel

If I recall:
Off is no eq at all. Audyssey would be the curve applied by Audyssey after room measurements. Audyssey BYP:L/R is Audyssey applied to all speakers except the front L and R. Audyssey Flat refers to eliminating the high frequency roll off in the Audyssey curve, and Manual is digital EQ set by the user around preset frequency values.

Since you have off currently selected, you are likely not using Audyssey or any EQ.

Daniel, the off setting means that none of the Audyssey room EQ results are in use(the calibration for speaker levels and delays remains in effect)although the results are still stored. No setting on the separate manual equalizer(not a part of Audyssey EQ) is in use.

The Byp:L/R means that the Audyssey room EQ results aren't in use for the mains, but are applied to the other speakers and sub.

The "Audyssey" setting applies a slight high frequency roll-off(about 2dB per octave above 4KHz, so that the roll-off is about 4dB at 16KHz). This is considered desirable for some movie and other material which has excessive high frequencies for some home room acoustics.

The "Flat" setting, which some misinterpret to mean no EQ, means only that the "Audyssey" high frequency roll-off isn't used, but a measured flat response with the test tones.

The "Manual" setting applies user selected EQ numbers to a small number of specific frequencies(a result Dr. Kyriakakis has termed "crude")and has sometimes been misinterpreted as being a way to "tweak" the Audyssey EQ results. They can't be used together.

Thanks guys! All this time I thought I was using the calibrated setup lol. Well I'm going to put it on Audyssey and watch a few movies to see if I notice a diff.

Seems odd though, you would think it would default to Audyssey after having actually running the calibration.

It does, but you said that you selected off. Note that calibration and room EQ are separate functions. As I pointed out above, calibration for speaker levels and delays remains in effect when room EQ is off.

Your Denon 3808CI allows up to 8 mic locations when running Audyssey. Make sure to use them all for best results.

Yes, use all 8 mic locations, and follow this guide for mic placement and everything else:
http://www.willowville.net/ht/Audyssey%20Setup%20Guide.pdf

I find my speakers to sound better with audyssey turned off but many say that it offers improvements for them.

I'll give it a try after I move and see how the results turn out in a different room.

Hi DanielBMe,

To follow up on the last post, listen carefully to your system (once the basic distances and setup are completed) with Audyssey's EQ switched off. Don't assume that Audyssey will make your system sound "better" simply because it applies elaborate equalization. It may sound different, but less neutral and less accurate.

If you prefer using the Audyssey EQ, then fine, but try and do an honest assessment of the sound quality with and without. Axiom speakers are designed to be very neutral and uncolored and you may prefer their natural balance unaided by any Audyssey equalization.

Regards,
Alan

Daniel, not sure what you mean by 3 locations, you should be able to run it at upto 6-8 locations, which will give you better results. You create a bubble around the seating area. There is also a button on the remote where you can cycle through the various options so you don't have to go into the menus.

Yes, I found that the Audyssey EQ harmed the superb stereo imaging of my M60's and did more harm than good to the frequency & transient response.

Yes, I used all 8 mic locations on my Denon 3808CI.

That said, my room is pretty dead acoustically and not too big. If you have room issues, you may be better with it on, but only until your room can be properly treated.

Also, the supposed corrections applied by Audyssey to the bass in my room just did not work at all. I had a large room peak between about 40-50Hz that the Audyssey did nothing about or made even worse. It really is amazing how much clean output there can be from the M60's down there when the room reinforces it!

I ended up EQ'ing only the feed to my SVS sub using REW (free Room EQ Wizard software - google "REW") with a Behringer DSP1124P and my old Radio Shack sound level meter.

So now with the crossover in the Denon at 80Hz, and the EQ only in the line to the Sub, I have been able to remove that peak and enjoy quite flat response down to the 20Hz region.

Doesn't the RS meter have a frequency response flat down to only 35Hz or so? If so, how do you know you're flat down to 20Hz?

REW has a correction file for the RS meter that applies the correction curve automatically.

As I understand it, that allows reasonably accurate measurements from 20 to about 300 Hz. (I think)

It may be that the low end is 25Hz.

In any case, a calibrated mic would obviously be better but I am happy with the results I achieved with the RS meter for now.

MarkyM,

Thanks for the feedback on your system without Audyssey.
