I am new to the Axiom Audio owners club and hoping someone can help me out with my sound issue. My new Vp150 seems to get lost during movies and television.

Some details on my setup... I have a Yamaha HTR-6060, with M60 fronts, vp150 and some old Sony surrounds. The vp150 sits about 12" off the ground and is angled up slightly. My seating position is about 8 feet from the speaker (a little close but its all i have to work with). I have been messing around with the EQ and speaker level settings for 3 weeks to try and get this thing to sound right but it sounds like everyone is speaking from behind a thin wall. I dont know if it has anything to do with it being a 6ohm speaker and my receiver set to 8ohm, or if my receiver is just underpowered. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

The Ohms have nothing to do with the sound signature of your speaker; it is only a value indicating what resistance is the speaker offering to the amplifier. Alan has written an excellent article covering this topic - Easy Answers to Confusing Specs: Sorting Out "Impedance"

Your Axiom VP150 center speaker should be classified as "Small" in your initial Yamaha speaker configuration. Using a sound pressure level, verify the speaker volume level of your speakers if needed the center speaker can be increased by a few dBs more than your left and right main speakers. Try it without applying any corrections from the Auto EQ function of your yamaha; run your Axiom speakers flat.

Then if you still have the same issue, please, remove the grille off the speaker and verify if all the drivers are functioning.

Keep us posted !

Thanks for the speedy reply JC.

I made all the changes you suggested and it sounds much better. The one that made the biggest difference was changing it from large to small. It now has more of that crisp sound i was originally expecting.

Thanks for your help.

If you have a powered sub, you should also change your other speakers to "small" as well. I know that it sounds contradictory since you have nice sized M60 speakers, but it will yield better results as well and I believe that it is also the THX recommended settings for all bit the most massive speakers.

Glad to hear that the VP150 is sounding better.
Oh, and welcome to the forums! smile

No powered sub yet but an EP500 is definitely in the plans for near future...

PV, welcome. Your receiver should have no problem with power or any other aspect. It's good that your VP150 now sounds better, but don't neglect to closely examine the drivers to make sure that all are actually operating. A "muffled" sound might have indicated that one, especially a tweeter. wasn't.
