I was listening to some music this morning (audioslave if it makes a difference) a little loud, like -12 on my HK8000, when I heard it pop and mute a little (like only 1 channel muted) then came back. I kinda thought I was hearing things because it was so quick (less than 2 seconds). Just a few min later, it popped louder and muted longer - and I sprinted to the receiver to turn it down. By the time I got there, it was back to normal. I turned the volume down a bit, then did a quick heat check, quite cool actually - I've felt it much warmer. So I checked each of the connections, wiggled them a bit to see if maybe something had come loose, and nothing seemed to be wrong... It played for the next 15-20 min without a problem before I headed off to work.

So now I'm at work, been worried all day, and dont have a clue as to whats wrong. Any ideas? I'd love to hear them as I'm at a complete loss!

Thanks!

Come to think of it... no It was like 11:AM eastern... maybe the surge traveled really slowly across the country?

well id say its not the speakers because more then likely its the amp. If you have some junk speakers hook them up and play music and see what happens so that if you fry the speakers because of the amp malfunctioning you wont take the M80's with ya. know what i mean.

It sounds to me like the amp went into protection mode. It's happened to me before, the M80's will eat up some power, they are efficient, as is it doesn't take much to wake them up, but when I listen to music loud, it has kicked my channels off a few times. I notice this mainly when I listen to music in the 5 channel mode. The amp will cut off only certain channels until that is cool enough to play again.

How many speakers were you driving? Does the 8000 say it can handle 4ohms? Offhand, I'd be surprised if your 110w HK (who as everyone knows rates its power very conservatively) was underpowered for the M80s but I'd have to agree with above, it sounds like your amp is trying to protect itself -- maybe just from bad music. Actually, I have to admit I never heard of audioslave so I went and downloaded a couple of samples -- pretty cool! Anyway, from the samples I heard, it doesn't sound like its the kind of music that has a lot of spikes or peaks (i.e. high energy transients). Does the track you were listening to have a lot of sudden bursts of energy (quick transitions from soft to loud sounds)?

LOL - Glad you at least checked it out before you wrote it off ... Anyway, no the song I was listening to was a simple song with very little variation (spikes or peaks). The 8000 does not say it is rated for 4ohms, but in every review/opinion I read before I bought it was fairly clear that 4ohms worked fine and posed little/no problems.

On a side note, I decided to replace all of the wiring (small sanity check) and havent heard it since. Hope that was it!

ZeN- Sounds like you may have figured out the problem.

I would also suggest investing in an AC line conditioner. Don't know how old your place (or your wiring) is, but I would guess that a good line conditioner would help you out with this issue.

Good luck.
