Hi All,

I have a few questions about the crossovers in
the Axiom AX-2s.

1st, What is the crossover frequency set at?

2nd, What is the value (mH) of the coils?

Also, I have two sets and they appear to have a
diffent design for the crossovers.

The earlier set seem to have a 1st order for the
woofer and a 2nd order for the tweeter.
Both of the coils, one to woofer, other as
part of 2nd order from tweeter appear to be the same.

The later set seem to have 2nd order crossovers
to both the tweeter and woofer.
The coil to the woofer is much larger, the coil that
is part of the 2nd order from tweeter looks to be
the same as both coils on the earlier sets crossover.

Can anyone tell me why the crossover's design was
changed and ID the components for me??

Thanks

You're going to need to email Axiom about this. I can guarantee that none of us have a clue.

If Axiom wont or cant share your can get one of These

I have one and it works quite well. If you get the Bass Box Pro software you can build your own crossover.

Todd, other than the 2500Hz crossover spec shown here , the info you're asking for would only be available directly from Axiom, as Ken points out(possibly not even there).

Hi Golfboy,

This is really pushing my memory banks (beyond their limits really). The AX2 was introduced in 1981 and continued until 1996 with many changes along the way. Without having your actual AX2s I don’t think I can answer your questions, and I would have designed them! Do you know what years they are from? Are you still using them?

Great Scotts Marty, we need to go back to the 80's or the future of the AX2's could be in jeopardy. Fire up the flux capacitor.

Hi Ian,

Yes, I'm still using them. I had to have the
8" drivers refoamed on one set which got me
looking at the crossovers.
I think I got them in 1985 or 1986.
The serial number on one set is 2308 and the
other set is 2188.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but WHY?!?! Do the crossovers need repair, or are you just in it for the academic curiosity?

Hi Golfboy,

That is very cool that you are still using them. We have a pair or two from that era in our museum collection. Unfortunately I can’t answer your crossover question though. I am pretty sure the crossover change would have been done to make an improvement to the family of curves. The relationship between the family of curves and the listen test results is really the name of the game in moving the performance quality forward in speaker design.

Hi All,

Thanks for the response Ian.

Porter - Had a set of M80s and loved them, but
they were overkill for my apartment.

Tom - They don't need repair, I was curious about
the differences between the earlier and later sets
and was considering upgrading the caps and coils
due to their age and to match them up.
