Crossover replacement difficulty in M80s - 02/14/14 02:46 PM
Has anyone upgraded their crossover in M80s from, say, v2 to v3? If so, is it particularly difficult and does it require any skill with soldering?

Hi Ken,
For any of the models with the separate chamber for the 5.25" woofer like the M60, M80, M100, and all the LFR Series it does involve soldering because the wires going to the internal chamber need to be removed on the crossover board (there is no way to get your hand up to that internal cabinet). You are going to want to have dainty hands to get at the bolts that hold the crossover board to the cabinet too. So my suggestion would be to not attempt it.

Changing the crossover is a fairly straight forward plug and play affair. Axiom has changed the mounting scheme along the way. Below is my M80 v2 which is screwed to the cabinet but other models have the crossover as part of the terminal cup. Would you be getting the crossover from axiom ??

Haha we posted at the same time. For Socketman it is no problem. It really does come down to your comfort level with the soldering and making sure the wires go in the right spot on the board.

Yes, I'd be getting the crossover from Axiom. Hmm. Pondering...I came into possession of some v3 woofers and mids (thanks, Charles!) to replace all my banged up ones (thanks, kids!) and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth doing a full on upgrade from v2 to v3 or whether just to replace the woofers and mids and live with the non-matching crossover (and tweeters...)

Yes. I'm not planning on replacing them right away, but getting matched crossovers, additional mids, and matched tweeters is somewhat time critical.

True , a little soldering is no big deal though I assumed the crossovers would come with the wires if bought from you, my bad. There are lots of tutorials on the net on proper soldering technique and a little practice makes perfect.The necessary equipment is not very expensive.

Cost is definitely a factor if you have to buy more drivers and the crossovers. If it were me, I would start with pricing it out and see if its cost prohibitive vs the benefits. When I bought my V2's they came with V3 drivers which Axiom graciously exchanged and no crossover changes were necessary from a listening standpoint. I listened both ways. The crossover change as I understand is a tweaking along the way rather than a wholesale change. Again if It were me I would change the drivers and then as funds become available do the crossovers.
