Hey all. Looks like it's time for a new receiver, my trusty old Onkyo 707 bit the dust. Won't come out of standby mode. Did as the manual says and it just won't turn on anymore.

My question is; I need a receiver that has preouts for my mains (M80s) I haven't looked into this stuff in 10 years so to say I'm feeling like a novice at this point is an understatement.

Any recommendations

Tried a hard reset and all I got was a pop and some sparks. Time for a new one.

https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-X3500-R...0344&sr=8-3

Just buy it for less than 600 of your dollars and enjoy!

I can't recommend Onk in that price range due to HDMI board issues which still persist 8 years after initial reports!

Thank you Mojo, that was the one I was looking at.

Use the Onkyo 707 for target practice.

Another great idea. I just got a CZ 455 in 17 hmr that needs sighted it
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/12/20 09:16 PM
That CZ won't produce the same level of destruction as my Springfield Armory XD-M 4.5" full size .45ACP.

Shower it with a mixture of 3/4 oil to 1/4 gas before killing it good. Dead receivers are always more fun on fire.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/12/20 09:28 PM
Guess I could always go with an AR and M855 steel core.

Hee hee hee. Atta boy! laugh

Rick - Accessories 4 less has the Denon refurb for $500. I have a 7200 refurb, and it looked brand new.

This link takes you to their Denon page - they also have some killer Marantz deals.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 02:09 AM

Thanks Craig. I just ordered the Denon 3500

Rick - cool stuff. And good to see you!

That's where I got it. Bought the Onkyo there 10 years ago, not a bad run.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 02:13 AM

Thanks Craig, nice to see you guys too. Hope all has been well.
Posted By: craigsub Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 02:21 AM
Rick - things are good. Seeing you brings back memories from 2004 to 2008.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 02:48 AM
Memories not as fond as when Rick had a 69 Firebird.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 02:49 AM

It's been a long time. Hopefully not bad ones LOL

Loved that car. I'm surprised you remembered that.

Hey Rick, good to hear from you. Like you I don't come around these parts to often. Great to hear you are getting a new AVR to rock the M80s! SRV never sounded so good... wink
Posted By: michael_d Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 09:29 PM
Hey Ricky! Glad to see your kicking!

I have the 3500 on order too. I also need pre-outs, but don't need all the bells and whistles or multiple channels. I had no idea so many companies reserve pre-outs for their "upper tier" stuff anymore.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 09:41 PM
My Denon 2105 has pre-outs for all 7 channels and per channel analog ins. I got it for $320 new in 2005.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/13/20 10:24 PM

Hey Randy, hope all is well

MIKEY, how ya doing brother. Looks like we will both be having the Denon and Rotel combo.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/16/20 08:51 PM

Got the receiver today, looks brand new. Setup was about as easy as can be. Sure have come a long way since the Onkyo 707. I do have to got back as set the receiver for 2 subs. That should be no big deal.

Other than that I super excited about the new gear. I think I need a new universal remote, my old Harmony is pretty dated. That will be for another thread.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/16/20 09:32 PM
That's great news. It would be great if you can give us your listening impressions.

I'm not much of an audio critic.

They're all similarly good to you as long as the smoke stays in. smile

Brother - you don't have to be a critic. Just post what you're listening to and how the system makes you feel. That's what it's all about.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/17/20 03:21 AM
Rick, no pressure dude. Just ignore Craig and enjoy. smile

If I remember correctly Rick had a ringing ear issue, but my memory is fading now that I'm in the 50 decade.

You are correct Randy, I’ve had it for years. Not getting any better either.
Posted By: Adrian Re: New receiver - 01/17/20 08:21 PM
Gibby's has the Onkyo TX-RZ820 B-stock @ $549Cad right now if anyone's interested. Says they have stock.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/17/20 08:48 PM
Good one! Unreal. With pre-outs. In a room under 2500 cu. ft., that's really all one needs.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/17/20 09:38 PM
It's really too bad that owners of these Onks continue to complain about problems that are related to the HDMI board.
Posted By: chesseroo Re: New receiver - 01/17/20 10:50 PM
I don't know if the complaints presently relate specificallly to the old HDMI issue, but i am wary of the B stock units even though they should be certified as working and come with the same warranty.
Are you really just inheriting someone else's problem?
Company takes back faulty unit. Attempts a fix of the most obvious fault. How much QAQC happens before it goes back out to sale as B stock? Was the problem they fixed not all of the problem? Caused by something else that wasn't replaced in the unit?

Here is a recent review from Amazon on this specific Onk.

.0 out of 5 stars Sounded AMAZING but Broken in Less than 2 Months
September 29, 2019
Style Name: TX-RZ830Verified Purchase
When we first received the Onkyo RZ830, it was working perfectly. Setup was a breeze and the sound was a HUGE upgrade from our aging Harman Kardon. However, little things began to act up - the on screen menu began to lag a lot, not by a second or two, but you had to wait more than 30 seconds for any button press to register. Then the wifi connection became more and more spotty, until it never worked again.

Will be contacting Gibby's for issue resolution.

Agreed, Chess.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/21/20 11:13 PM

Well it looks like I need to return this unit. Tried to use it today and i have no power to it. Not sure what else I could do, it played great when I first got it.

It didn't go into protect mode or nothing, just freakin dead.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 12:07 AM
Sad!
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 12:10 AM

Yep, looks like I'll be returning it. Seeing that I used it for a couple hours on Thursday without a hitch and all speakers sounded great I can't see it being a speaker problem, right ? It would have went into protect mode or so I would have thought.
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 12:19 AM
Agreed. Punt it.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 12:23 AM

That's what I thought. Disappointing but I'm sure they will make it right. Gonna try for a refund and buy on Amazon. Fingers crossed
Posted By: michael_d Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 03:25 AM
Try unplugging it for a few minutes, then plug it back in. Might need to be re-set.

I'm knocking on wood, but mine has been working fine.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 12:02 PM

I was in contact with AFL and tried a hard reset to no avail. Looking to get a shipping label, hopefully today.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 03:49 PM
Man that sucks Rick with AV problems like this with new equipment. I've never had that happen, lol EMOTIVA protecting mode when driving hard to drive M80s and Haunted thumping EP600 subs... smile

Man I hope you get things resolved and can start enjoying your system again...
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 04:44 PM
The unit is packed up and ready for Fedx. They will send another when they get the tracking number. I’m sure it will all be good.
Posted By: Adrian Re: New receiver - 01/22/20 09:54 PM
Sorry about the bad luck, Rick. I've never had an issue with a Denon product, had to shut my x4000 off to reset it once though.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/26/20 06:05 PM

Got the receiver in today. Not hooking it up just yet, it's pretty cold out and not sure about using it right away. What is the "rule" for letting these things acclimate to room temp ?
Posted By: Mojo Re: New receiver - 01/26/20 07:14 PM
Remove all the packaging, and leave it out for a full 24 hours mostly to evaporate any water that may have condensed on the unit. Place it away from a dusty environment or lots of air movement to prevent particles from adhering on any condensation that may have formed.
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/26/20 08:11 PM
Thanks, I’ll wait till tomorrow to set it up
Posted By: SirQuack Re: New receiver - 01/27/20 02:05 PM
pluger in and letter rip, smile
Posted By: Wid Re: New receiver - 01/27/20 10:29 PM

Up and running again. Hopefully that first one was just a fluke.
